Expanse features the work of
Sean P. Morrissey and Lenore Thomas; both exploring our environments in
connected, but different ways. Morrissey, a Professor of Printmaking at the
University of Arkansas, deals with domestic and suburban space as it relates to
self-identification and identity building. The uniqueness that one hopes to
achieve through aesthetic choices is called into question through the use of
predetermined and superficial architectural elements. Thomas, a Professor of
Studio Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, examines landscape through the
ways in which it is perceived, often tied to its vastness and ambiguous nature.
Flat colors, abstract forms, and an obscured sense of depth help reinforce
Thomas’ investigation of our surroundings. The aesthetic relationship between
these two artists creates a conversation on markedly different ideas. How they
think about our world allows the viewer to interrogate their own understanding
of our shared environments.
