Immersion Tours


On the final day of the conference, Thursday, May 19, 2022, attendees will depart for half-day or full-day immersion tours, a longer, more extensive version of our “Behind the Scenes” tours at previous IWF conferences. These tours have been thoughtfully curated by the members of IWF Chile - please refer to the descriptions and tour length below as they vary. 

The tours will have a staggered departure from the W Santiago, beginning at 9:00 am. All attendees will return to the W Santiago at 4:00 pm at the latest, in time for the closing dinner celebration later that evening.  All tours will have an English speaking guide on the bus. 

 


Journey to the Coast: Zapallar and A Collector's Home


Take a journey to the Chilean coast with IWF Chile Leader, Pamela Camus, as you experience the picturesque town of Zapallar. A former fishing village, Zapallar is now an elegant seaside resort and has played a significant role as a playground for Chile's economic and political elites. Edgardo von Schroeders, a Zapallar resident and son of one of the founding families of the area, will guide you through the village, and introduce you to the stories that chronicle the history of the area. The tour will conclude at IWF Chile member Patricia Ready´s house for refreshments and a peek inside her beautiful home and incredible art collection. Patricia is also the owner of one of the most well-known art galleries in Santiago, Galeria Patricia Ready.

Travel Time by bus -  2 Hours one way.

Full Day Tour (6 Hours).

Historic Estate Visit of the Ibañez Bulnes Family 


This historic estate, home of the Ibañez Bulnes family, was built in in 1930 by Don Adolfo Ibañez, a visionary businessman from Valparaíso, a senator, and founder of the Adolfo Ibáñez University. Featuring landscaping by Oscar Praguer (a prominent German landscape architect of Chilean parks and cities in the first half of the twentieth century), the park hosts a great variety of native and imported trees, divided into geographical sectors, such as jungle and Mediterranean areas. Located in San Felipe, Valparaíso, this family ranch continues to produce local agricultural products such as avocados and custard apples and to serve as a breeding ground for horses.
 
Landscape Architect Ximena Nazar will offer a guided walking tour of the park, an excellent opportunity for outdoor landscaping enthusiasts. Lunch will be served after the tour. 
 
Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes each way.

Full day tour (5-6 hours).

Lunch will be provided by the hosts as part of this immersion tour. 

 


Luxury Textiles in Latin America – Presented by KUNA


You’ve heard of alpacas, but have you heard of Vicuña, one of the two wild camelids from the Andes known for their incredibly soft hair? This textile experience and fashion show and presentation will be hosted at the Embassy of Peru by Ambassador Jaime Pomareda and his wife, Mrs. Susanna Pomareda.

Enjoy a pisco sour among the Embassy garden, listen to the sounds of a folk music performance and watch a mini fashion show, as you learn about the incredible natural animal fiber. This excursion will be presented by KUNA, and led by IWF Chile Member M. Paz Tagle.  The KUNA brand produces luxury textile products from the best alpaca, vicuna, llama and guanaco fibers. It also focuses on the importance to conserve, breed and improve these species, and the efforts to preserve the Andean communities and their invaluable knowledge and culture. KUNA offers the world of design and fashion a style that expresses and evokes works of nature, human skills and a fabulous legacy, fusing them into a unique and captivating contemporary style.

A Visit to National Opera House (Teatro Municipal de Santiago) and Pereira Palace (Palacio Pereira)


Join the director of the Municipal Theater of Santiago, and IWF Chile Member Carmen Gloria Larenas for a peek behind the stage of the Teatro Municipal, National Opera of Chile.  This neoclassical style landmark has been home to the performing arts since 1857 and was declared a national monument in 1974.  You’ll also explore the archives, theater props, workshops and Presidential Box which is closed to the public.  
You’ll then head over to the magnificent  Pereira Palace, a historic neoclassic mansion located in downtown Santiago. Once on the brim of deterioration, the mansion was carefully restored to its former glory. The building is currently home to Chile’s Ministry of Culture and the Constituent Commission (in charge of drafting the new constitution for the country). You’ll learn how the interior and exterior building elements deteriorated over time and how their artisans restored this architectural gem.

Science for Life Foundation Research Center


Join IWF Chile member Cecilia Fabres for an unforgettable experience in the world of science hosted by IWF Chile member Bernardita Méndez, PhD and President and Co-Founder of Fundación Ciencia & Vida. 

Fundación Ciencia & Vida is a non-profit institute whose objective is to improve social economic development of Chile through scientific discovery, bio-entrepreneurship, and life science education. The Fundación has created a unique campus where scientists, entrepreneurs, students and communicators interact, promoting scientific discovery in biomedicine and biotechnology, science culture and bio-startups.    

The program will include an introduction by Dr. Méndez and researchers covering institute highlights. This will be followed by a visit to the labs which will include a hands-on activity, where participants will have the opportunity to wear a white lab coat and conduct a molecular biology experiment.

Spirituality and Design: Bahá'í Temple


Join IWF Chile member Mercedes Ducci on this spiritual visit accompanied by Juan Grimm, a Chilean landscape architect whose career has positioned him as one of the best in Latin America. 

Located in the foothills of the Andes, in the city of Santiago, the Bahá'í Temple or Bahá'í House of Worship of South America serves and celebrates the diversity of the original cultures and peoples of the region. It has won many of the top architecture awards, including the AIA Honors Award, the OAA Design Excellence Award, the RAIC Innovation Award, the Canadian Architect’s Award of Excellence, and was reviewed by National Geographic magazine. The structure includes a  9-petalled flower, 30 meters high and 30 meters in diameter, perched on the mountain range. Each petal is made up of unique pieces of molten glass on the outside and translucent marble on the inside, which are structured using tubular steel profiles. The flower rests on a garden of native plants that is divided into 9 paths and has 9 fountains. The Baha'i temples have in common their nine sides, a symbol of openness and welcome to all their visitors, without distinction of creed, race, ethnicity, gender, and age.

Traditional Chilean Culinary Class


Join IWF Chile member and Chef Pilar Rodriguez from the Food & Wine Studio in Santa Cruz, as she demonstrates the art of cooking local cuisine at the Kitchen Club in Santiago. Experience a live gastronomic experience and savor the foods of the region. This interactive workshop with other IWF Members is a fun and delicious way of discovering the roots of Chilean food and the cooking methods of this fascinating culture.

Under the Chilean Stars:  Planetarium Tour 


Chile can be considered astronomy's world capital and an Astronomer’s paradise. -Home to nearly half of the world's astronomical infrastructure because of its dry desert atmosphere, Chile experiences more than 200 cloudless nights each year. Even more important to stargazers, Chile provides a clear view of the spectacular Southern Sky. This exclusive tour will be hosted by IWF Chile Member and award-winning astronomer, Dr. Mónica Rubio, with support from fellow IWF Chile member Catalina Cabello.

The program will include a visit to the facilities of the Planetarium with its 72 foot (22 meter) high dome, one of the largest in the world, and a telescope that works with more than 50 digital projectors in combination with the the most powerful Zeiss projector for an awe-inspiring presentation.

Wine Tasting and Tour at Viña Casas del Bosque


Join IWF Chile member Giorgianna Cuneo and owner of the Viña Casas del Bosque
for a tour and tasting. You’ll also learn about the winery’s sustainable practices while enjoying lunch amongst the vines. 

Nestled in Chile’s Casbalanca Valley, Viña Casas del Bosque was founded in 1993 and is an award-winning winery known for the ancient pine and olive forest and small white adobe houses that surround it. The compounded red clay soil of the region gives the wines of Viña Casas del Bosque a unique, sea salt flavor. The winery is exclusively dedicated to the production of cold-climate varieties, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Wine Tasting at Vinolia plus Shopping Experience


Dive into the world of Chilean viticulture on a wine tasting experience conveniently located in the heart of Santiago. The experience will be guided by IWF Chile member Veronica Gonzalez. From the comfort of your seat, sip on a variety of wines, as you take a virtual tour of vineyards and valleys and learn about terroir, flavors, and aromas with a sommelier during this interactive experience. Afterward, you’ll be guided to nearby boutiques and art galleries for independent shopping.

Wine Tasting and Tour at Viña Santa Rita


Viña Santa Rita was founded in 1880 by Don Domingo Fernández Concha, a leading businessman and public figure of the time. Don Domingo brought the finest French grape varieties to the rich soils of the Maipo Valley, together with specialized equipment and a team of top winemakers from France. This brought techniques that were hitherto unknown in Chile, changing the way in which wines were made in the country and bringing spectacular results. The Estate is best known for its red wines as it is located in the foothills near Santiago.

Join IWF Chile member Maria Elena Wood for a visit to the special winery heritage buildings, as well as a guided tasting. The tour also includes a visit to the Andean Museum, located inside the winery, that keeps 3,000 archeological and ethnographic pieces from Pre-Colombian culture, expressions of mestizaje, a blending of indigenous and European cultures in the Americas.
