Having found a love for learning about how children like herself develop and learn helped her figure herself out while attending 7 years of therapy and programs and finding a second family through her new-found faith and at her church, she then followed her own children's educational path into an Elementary Education degree program at UNM in Albuquerque, student teaching in APS in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. After a traumatizing charter school experience in a 6th grade classroom in her first year of teaching and subsequent health issues, she Homeschooled her children for 3 years, then short and long-term substitute taught in the Moriarty Edgewood School District for nearly 2 years. She then entered the teaching profession again, experiencing another challenging teaching year in a 5th grade English Language Arts (ELA)/Social Studies (SS) class in another charter school. She then taught in a private school in 1st grade for almost 3 years while continuing to regain her health with limited professional development and much lower demands on her time and energy. After nearly missing the opportunity to renew her licensure and move to Level II, she became hungry to keep learning about how people grow and develop and how to be a better teacher. She was ready to continue developing professionally, so she taught at a State charter school while pursuing another license in Special Education through an alternative licensure program and a second endorsement, this time in Gifted. She taught 1st grade for one year, as the Writing Specialist for 60 students, then became the Reading Specialist. The next year, she was the Art/Social and Emotional Learning/Project-Based Learning/Reading Interventions/Special Education Teacher for 1/2 of the year and then K-3 Elementary Reading Interventions/K-12 Special Education Teacher and Case Manager/K-3 WIDA ACCESS, Istation, iRead, Read 180, System 44 and Diagnostic Placement Test Administrator for the last 1 1/2 years. She began an MA for Educational Leadership at UNM (for administrative licensure) and began carefully studying the laws and policies pertaining to student behavior, discipline, student needs, parental engagement and retention. There were so many issues with how teachers were being asked to conduct their teaching and behavior management that conflicted with these laws and policies that when she began to speak out, she was summarily ignored and shunned. When the opportunity to move into a founding leadership and administrative position as the Student Supports Coordinator for a brand new charter school presented itself, she took it, believing that things were going to be different. Within 3 months, she recognized that they weren't and resigned to start her own business and advocate for the changes that are so desperately needed in New Mexico's education system. Bonnie Murphy presents on where the gaps are and the differences between high quality early childhood or preschool education and elementary or secondary education and what we need to do about it. Research demonstrates the need to go back to the basics with Social and Emotional Learning and Lev Vygotskian project-based learning approaches, smaller class sizes, parents, families and community education and involvement, and to demand transparency and accountability for the way our state's children are being developed and educated, so they will have the best opportunities that our money, resources, time and energies will afford them and so that our state's teachers will be able to love teaching once again. Another gap is that we have little to no Social & Emotional Learning taking place in elementary through high school after many having received this education in their preschool experiences and many in critical need of that continuity in their lives and education. Bonnie is becoming involved with legislation and is writing a book and producing a guide for parents and families to help them navigate these difficult NM terrains in the future.
