Tours have been organized for the combustion research laboratories at the two leading research universities in the San Francisco Bay Area, Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. The UC Berkeley tour is on Sunday, 3 August, prior to the commencement of the Symposium, while the Stanford University tour is on Saturday, 9 August, just after the conclusion of the Symposium.
UC Berkeley Tour
This is a self-guided tour. Participants will need to get their own transportation to the UC Berkeley campus and then walk to the combustion lab location. Transport via the local subway, known as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is recommended: www.bart.gov .
BART trains typically depart every 20 min. on the weekend. To reach the UC Berkeley campus from San Francisco, take a BART train heading towards ‘Pittsburgh/Bay Point’ and change trains at the 19th Street station in Oakland for a train heading towards ‘Richmond’. At the third stop on the Richmond train, exit at the Downtown Berkeley station. If starting at the Embarcadero station (next to the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco), this trip should cost $3.90 each way and should take approximately 25 minutes. Student volunteers will be at the Embarcadero station from 08:45-10:30 to assist with purchasing tickets and at the Downtown Berkeley station from 09:20-11:00 to hand out maps and give directions to the university labs (a 15 minute walk from the BART station).
To reach the UC Berkeley campus from Oakland, simply board a train heading towards ‘Richmond’ and exit at the Downtown Berkeley station. From the 12th Street station in Oakland (closest to the Oakland Marriott), this trip will take 11 minutes and cost $1.85 each way.
Exit the Downtown Berkeley BART station through the ‘Center Street’ exit and continue to the campus via Center Street. A combustion analysis lab and three engine labs will be available for tours from 10:00-12:00 at Hesse Hall.
Upon completing the combustion lab tours, visitors are encouraged to embark on a self-guided tour of the UC Berkeley campus: http://visitors.berkeley.edu/tour/self.shtml
Berkeley campus tours may be taken in several ways:
Tours on your mobile device: Take the mobile campus tour at m.berkeley.edu/tour
Podcast tours: Download our video podcast tour in English or Spanish onto your iPhone, iPod or other MP3 player, or home computer. Go to Berkeley on iTunes U, and search for "UC Berkeley Audio Tour".
