CUGH SATELLITE SESSIONS

On Thursday April 6, 2017, CUGH is proud to present a series of satellite sessions developed and hosted by CUGH working committees and partnering institutions.

These sessions are opportunities to delve in depth into a number of global health issues through half or full day sessions. All satellite sessions on April 6 require registration - separate from registration for the sessions of April 7 - 9, 2017.

Satellite sessions of April 7 - 9 do not require pre-registration for the individual sessions, but registration for the full conference *is required*.

THE ROLE OF EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTERS IN CREATING COMMUNITY RESILIENCY
9am - 12pm, Room:  Columbia 4
CRDF Global

CRDF Global will host and facilitate a multi-disciplinary panel of experts who will provide viewpoints on the support and development of EOCs as a source of resiliency in East and Sub-Saharan Africa and around the world. The panel will use Kenya's EOC development as a case study in how universities and other stakeholders can support EOCs as a source of resiliency in pandemics and other significant disease outbreaks. The session will specifically address costing models, curriculum for EOC leadership and managers, risk-based exercises and multi-sectoral response. The discussion will include specific examples from around the globe based on the panel's work in Sub-Saharan Africa, Jorden, Ukraine, and Iraq.

CRDF has been a leading implementer of programs facilitating international collaboration to strengthen global health research and security challenges for over a decade.


POLITICS OF GLOBAL HEALTH: POLITICAL WILL AND SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF SUSTAINABLE PROGRAMS

CUGH Trainee Advisory Committee

This half-day trainee-led session will provide trainees with diverse opportunities to broaden their understanding and master skills necessary to navigate the politics of global health, as well as the opportunity to further develop a peer network of culturally and professionally diverse trainees who share a similar passion. Students will not only be able to hear about the experience of several leaders from a wide variety of fields within the global health community, but also be able to directly interact with them through a series of unique skill building breakout sessions.


HOW DOES THE READERSHIP OF JOURNALS FROM DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES UNDERSTAND GLOBAL HEALTH?

CUGH Research Committee

This satellite session will provide a whole new scope on the global health agenda from editors whose priorities lies in different fields.

A conversation with a panel of editrs from the worlds of geoscience, architecture, design and technology and business, and editors from global health journals. The panel will discuss ways to introduce the  global health agenda  into their respective fields, and to share lessons on moving knowledge from paper publication to on the ground impact   The  focus will be on how global health messages are delivered and perceived in different disciplines.

CONSTRUCTING AND GOVERNING APPLIED RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS IN MATERNAL, NEWBORN, AND CHILD HEALTH

USAID | TRAction Project at University Research Co., LLC, University of California, San Francisco and University of California Berkeley IGHDD, Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy at the City University of New York

A range of partners, representing various stakeholder groups poised to contribute to applied research and research-to-use efforts, will come out of this discussion with a shared perspective on comparative institutional strengths, opportunities to engage in partnership activities, leveraging partnerships to augment research and advocacy efforts, and the value partnership can bring to efforts to achieve individual institutional objectives and to our collective goals in improving MNCH.


WORKSHOP ON BEST PRACTICES FOR GLOBAL HEALTH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Child Family Health International

This workshop combines the expertise within the fields of international education and global health education to present and allow attendees to explore the application of pedagogies and guidelines, as well as safe/security/risk management best practices that have been refined over the past decades within the fields of study abroad.

PUTTING QUALITY ON THE GLOBAL HEALTH AGENDA
1pm - 5pm, Room: Columbia 6
McGill University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Harvard Global Health Institute

This session will convene leading experts to address the critical issue of measuring and improving quality of healthcare in low income settings. It will provide an overview of key issues in measuring and improving quality of healthcare in low income settings through a series of lectures followed by an interactive panel discussion.


GLOBAL OPERATIONS 2017: TOOLS FOR FACULTY & ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERS
1pm - 5pm, Room: Columbia 3
CUGH Enabling Systems Committee

This workshop will focus on practical steps to enable and expand overseas research cost-effectively and responsibly - including coordinating structures, business and academic processes, funding mechanisms and grant recoverability. Both faculty and administrators are welcomed to the four-hour workshop. Participants will learn about operational and regulatory challenges and requirements, different models for global support and information sharing, and how to apply these models to improve collaboration and program success. Panels will be followed by Q&A to allow for discussion of how participants can follow these examples on their home campuses.



URBAN HEALTH, A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Georgetown University

This session will focus on the complexities surrounding the determinants of health in dynamic urban settings, its implications for governance and policy (including promising approaches), and critical directions for research, innovation, and teaching to more effectively respond to these challenges

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES IN LOW INCOME COUNTRIES: A NEGLECTED CATASTROPHE

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) & Makerere University

Non-Communicable Diseases are killing more people around the world than infectious diseases and will only become worse in the years ahead. They particularly affect low income countries the hardest, killing and disabling people at a younger age. This satellite will share the scope of the problem and ways in which countries and the international community can address them.

GLOBAL SURGICAL ECOSYSTEM: STRENGTHENING HEALTHCARE WORLDWIDE

American College of Surgeons (ACS) Operation Giving Back, The G4 Alliance, University of Utah, WHO

Surgical ecosystems are complex. The session will address fundamentals common to surgical, anesthesia, gynecology, and obstetric care worldwide, highlighting gaps and opportunities for strengthening health everywhere, especially in LMICs. The themes will include: defining the problem, exploring solutions, measuring impact, and partnerships for education. The focus will be sustainable, safe surgical ecosystems.



5th ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM ON GLOBAL CANCER RESEARCH: INTEGRATING CANCER RESEARCH FOR IMPROVED GLOBAL HEALTH

This Symposium is an annual event started in 2013 thataims to promote the exchange of scientific findings, best practices, and innovations in global cancer research and control. COMMUNITY HEALTH IN THE SDG ERA

Maternal and Child Survival Program

This session will set the stage for advancing community health policies and programs within the context of primary care systems as a foundation for driving community engagement in the new UN Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescent's Health. Speakers will characterize the roles of communities as resources in systems to achieve the SDG goals in health and highlight how some countries are working towards sustaining and scaling up partnerships and communities.

THE GHFP-II AND CUGH RECENT GRADUATE STUDY

This session will discuss the results from the GHFP-II and CUGH Recent Graduates Study. The study aimed to better understand the experiences of gradutes from master's level global health programs when seeking jobs and the fit of graduate program curricula and workplace demand. Attendees can expect to leave with clearer expectations for transitioning into the global health workforce and new tools and resources to gain in-demand skills.

Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting & Global Health NOW

Immediately following this year's CUGH conference closing, please join the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, an international journalism organization, and Global Health NOW from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for a workshop on tips and tools for engaging the news media. Alongside global health journalists and communications specialists, participants will learn the skills needed to pitch a story, translate to a lay audience, and make both traditional and nontraditional media work for you.
