The Annual Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health is an event organized by the Health Initiative of the Americas at the University of California Berkeley. The Institute has gained national and international recognition, since it is one of the few academic spaces dedicated to present and analyze in depth the interrelation between migration, the health of migrants, and global health from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

This year the focus of the 15th Summer Institute will be on assessing the effects of pandemics on migrants and refugees, and how to protect these populations. Compared to host country populations, the 272 million international migrants and refugees worldwide are at high risk of disproportionate burden from pandemics, including COVID-19, because of social, political, and structural factors associated with their migration status. Increasing border restrictions have also had an impact on the mobility of migrants and the role of humanitarian organizations serving them. At the same time, migrants and refugees represent a high share of workers in critical sectors during the COVID-19 response, including healthcare and the food supply system.

During the eight sessions of the Summer Institute, participants will have the opportunity to hear from experts about how national and international policies and practices related to COVID-19 have impacted migrant and refugee populations in Europe, the Americas, and other world regions. They will also learn about best practices to outreach and provide services to mobile populations during pandemics.

 Modality

The Institute will be online. Registered participants will have the opportunity to watch the live presentations via Zoom, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. PDT (find your time zone here https://www.thetimezoneconverter.com/). 

Participants will also have access to a password protected virtual classroom where they will be able to view the recorded sessions at their preferred time. The virtual classroom will also include supplemental materials for each one of the covered topics, and participants will be able to engage in discussions and exchange ideas and experiences with others via discussion boards.
