07.15.2021| Vents 101 and Care of the Chronic Vent-dependent Patient

This course outlined basic ventilator modes, particularly those most often used in home setting. An emphasis was provided on special consideration for vent-dependent tracheostomized patients who return home and are cared for by family caregivers. Optimizing tracheostomy outcomes for chronic vent-dependent patients was also reviewed.


08.19.2021| Emergency Management of Patients with Surgical Airways

This course outlined the differences between a tracheostoma and laryngectomy stoma as well as the pertinent difference in resuscitation techniques. The life-threating complications of not being able to differentiate between a tracheostomy and laryngectomy were also discussed. Finally, emergency management algorithms for patients with tracheostomies and laryngectomies were reviewed in detail.


09.16.2021| Interdisciplinary Total Laryngectomy Care Across the Rehab Continuum

During this course, participants will learn about the primary methods of verbal communication for people with total laryngectomies. They will also learn of the benefits of Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) systems and team roles in caring for patients who have undergone total laryngectomy.


10.21.2021| Restoring Communication and Managing Swallowing Post Tracheostomy
PRESENTED BY: Kimberly Eichhorn, MS, CCC-SLP; BC-ANCDS; ATP and Lisa Markley, MS, CCC-SLP

Participants will learn about the role of instrumental swallowing exams in patients with tracheostomies. Common findings, treatment decisions, and discussions re: changes in swallowing biomechanics will be discussed. One-way valve candidacy and utilization as well as alternative options for communication when one-way valve usage is contra-indicated or not possible.


11.04.2021| Airway Teams: Do they really matter?

This course provides an overview of the interdisciplinary surgical airway team construct including identifying key members of an airway team. The benefits of an interdisciplinary surgical airway team will be examined as well a proposed model of an interdisciplinary surgical airway team. Further discussion will explore how to establish an interdisciplinary surgical airway team.
