Rome
A heady mix of haunting ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life; Italy’s hot-blooded capital is one of the world’s most romantic and charismatic cities.
For almost 2,700 years, Rome has been continuously inhabited, and as the headquarters initially of the Roman Empire and then of the Roman Catholic Church, it has had a huge impact on the world.
Many European languages are based on Latin, many political and legal systems follow the ancient Roman model; and buildings all round the world utilise styles and techniques which were perfected in ancient Rome.
Conference venue and hotel accommodation
The Rome Marriott Park Hotel is located only 11km from Fiumicino International Airport and 14km from Rome's city centre. A taxi ride will take you into the centre, where you can wander to the Coliseum, ascend the Spanish Steps and make your wish at the Trevi Fountain. As one of Europe's largest convention centres, all 601 rooms at the hotel have luxurious “Marriott Revive” bedding, marble bathrooms, soundproof windows and handcrafted furniture.
Conference fees
The conference fee includes attendance at all conference sessions and workshops, access to all digital conference information, conference lunches and two conference dinners.
The fee for accompanying persons includes two conference dinners and the tour on Wednesday 26 October
(see Social Events).

*This rate is available to member organisations from developing countries where the member organisation has gross premium income of less than USD 20 million. Each company can register a maximum of two delegates at this rate.
Cancellation policy
Any cancellations received prior to 13 September 2022 will be given 90% refund. Any cancellations received on or after 13 September 2022 will be subject to the conference fee being paid in full. The fee will be kept as credit and your company will be able to use it later against any other paying activity organised by ICMIF (including other conferences or leadership courses) for up to two years (by the end of 2024).
Conference registration
There will be an ICMIF registration desk located in the foyer of Michelangelo Ballroom of the Marriot Park Hotel. The desk will be open for conference registration on Monday 24 October, from 13.00 to 18.00 and on Tuesday 25 October from 08.00 to 18.00. Upon arrival at the hotel, you will need to register in order to receive your delegate badge.
Conference website and App
Full information on the Centenary Conference, including the agenda, speaker information and profiles, and all logistical information, will be available on the conference website prior to the event. This website will also contain all the latest practical information relating to the event. The speeches, PowerPoint presentations and videos will be posted on the conference website soon after the event comes to a close.
Languages
At the conference, simultaneous interpretation will be offered in English, Spanish, Japanese and French.
Although the official language spoken in Rome is Italian, travellers will find that many locals speak English, especially those who work in restaurants, hotels and other places associated with tourism.
Airport and transportation to the hotel
Rome has two airports - Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) and Ciampino.
Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) airport FCO is Rome’s main airport. Each day the hub connects with 200 destinations with an effectiveness and security that are unrivalled in the world, with over 40 million passengers per year. It is also well-connected with the centre of Rome during the day by an express train.
The express train between Fiumicino Airport and Stazione Termini (Rome's main train station) costs EUR 9.50 and the journey takes about 30 minutes. The train departs from and arrives at Termini station at track no 27 and runs from 06.30 till 11.30.
Ciampino airport: Rome's smaller airport, is mostly used by charter flights and budget airlines.
To get to the centre of Rome from this airport, take the COTRAL bus, get off at Metro A: Anagnina station, then to Termini Station. The COTRAL bus runs every 30 minutes, until 23.00. The only way to get to Rome after this time is to take a taxi.
Taxis to city centre
The licenced taxi drivers are located at the stand where there is a sign that reads “TAXI” located directly outside of the arrival terminal. Taxis in Rome are white and have an emblem on the side door that reads “Comune di Roma.”
The fixed fare for an official Rome taxi is EUR 48 between Fiumicino airportand central Rome (within the Aurelian walls) for up to four people and their luggage. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes to most parts of this central area. The trip from the airport to the conference hotel Marriot Park should be approximately EUR 35.
Please note that the fixed price from the airport to central Rome applies only to taxis which are licensed by the City of Rome. Other taxis, such as those licensed by the Comune of Fiumicino, can charge by their meter. We recommend that you take an official, licenced Roman taxi.
The fare from Ciampino airport to the city centre is EUR 30.
ICMIF COVID-19 vaccination policy
In determining access to our events ICMIF will follow the guidelines in force in host countries in regard to vaccination status. Information regarding the latest requirements in Italy can be found here. We kindly request that anyone who wishes to attend the ICMIF Centenary Conference checks that they can comply with entry requirements to Italy.
This requirement applies to ICMIF staff, delegates, delegates’ accompanying persons, vendors, sponsors, media and any other ancillary partners who plan to attend or provide a service at any ICMIF event. ICMIF will continue to monitor the global COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on both domestic and international populations. We reserve the right to amend this vaccination policy accordingly.

Currency
In Italy the unit of currency is the Euro (€). ATMs are widespread. Major credit cards are widely accepted but some smaller shops, trattorias and hotels might not take them.
Tipping
Romans are not big tippers, but the following is a rough guide:
- Tipping in taxis is optional, but most people round up their fare to the nearest Euro.
- In restaurants the service (servizio) is generally included; if not, a Euro or two is fine in pizzerias and trattorias, no more than five to 10% in smart restaurants.
- Tipping in bars is not considered necessary, although many people leave small change if drinking at the bar.
- At A-list hotels, it is customary, to tip porters approximately EUR 5.
Climate
Rome has a Mediterranean climate with cool winters and generally hot summers, which means that any time of year is good for visiting the city. October is a wonderful month to visit Rome. The weather is pleasant, the leaves are turning red and the air is more refreshing than in previous months. With an average temperature of 18°C and highs of 23°C, Rome is warm but not hot in October. And with eight hours of sunshine per day and only 94 mm or so of rainfall over 12 days in the month, you'll have plenty of time to explore the city without seeing much rain.
Passport and VISA information
EU citizens: Italy, since 1958, has been part of the European Union. Therefore, citizens of countries belonging to the Schengen Zone may visit Rome with just a passport or valid ID document.
US citizens: for a trip of less than 90 days, American citizens are not required to have a visa to enter Italy. However, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your planned departure date.
Australian and New Zealand citizens: for a trip of less than 90 days, Australian citizens are not required to have a visa to enter Italy. Your passport must have at least six-month validity from your planned date of return. New Zealanders do not require a visa to enter Italy and can spend up to three months in the country. However, they will need a return ticket and a passport with at least three-month validity from their planned departure date. Some other countries and states do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days but require a valid passport to enter Italy. Free evenings and local cuisine
It is possible to visit Rome and create an exciting itinerary of your choice for your free time. In Rome, there are more than 220 museums and 15 UNESCO sites. The city also has many historical settings: Ancient Rome with the Coliseum; the Fori; Saint Peter and the Sistine Chapel; and baroque churches with paintings by Caravaggio and Raffaello. But it is also a modern city with blue, clear skies and a peaceful way of living giving the perfect Rome backdrop.
Food
Rome is a feast also for the senses and the tastebuds with places to eat including one of the hundreds of places offering "pizza al taglio" (pizza in square slices) to chic, high-end restaurants. From the suburban areas like Pigneto or Garbatella to Trastevere or Piazza Navona, you will find restaurants in every corner ready to celebrate the ritual of the food of Rome that has made Italian cuisine famous across the world. Nightlife and entertainment
There are many options for a night in Rome, you can stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Trastevere area (just a few steps away from the Tiber River) with an ice cream in your hand. Or decide to sit in a cafe overlooking Campo De Fiori and watch life go by. Or, you can choose to dance the night away in one of the many clubs in Testaccio, the "hot spot" of Roman nightlife.
The city also offers many opportunities for those of you who enjoy theatre and the opera. From small ‘underground’ theatres, to big theatres such as Teatro Argentina and Sistina, to unusual locations such as churches, the dramatic arts and theatre offerings in Rome vary from classical plays to more unconventional ones. Shopping
Rome is an expensive city, so don't expect to find many bargains. Nevertheless, window shopping is a joy, especially if you're roaming around Piazza Di Spagna where you will find the luxurious boutiques such as Gucci, Valentino and Fendi. Rome also has many high-street shops too, such as H&M, Tezenis and Aldo. If you venture towards the areas of Testaccio and Trastevere, you will find many indoor and outdoor markets selling everything from clothes and bags to books and antiques. As an alternative to the shops located in the city centre, you may also wish to visit the Castelromano Outlet Centre.
Local transport
It is useful to know that the historic centre is not particularly large (only 2.5 km/1.5 miles from the Colosseum to the Piazza di Spagna) and so is easy to explore on foot, as most monuments can be found in the same area. Rome's bus network is extensive and functions quite well, but the metro/subway is much simpler for visitors to use. Public transportation tickets must be purchased in advance from newsagents, newsstands, bars or vending machines (exact change only) at metro and major bus stops.
Metro
The Roman metro (called Metropolitana by residents) goes round rather than through the historic city. It has only two lines, A (red) and B (blue), which cross at the Termini Central Station. Trains run approximately every 7-10 minutes, from 5.30 until 23.30 every day (until 00.30 on Saturdays).
Taxis in the city centre
We recommend that you look for the official, licenced white or yellow taxis which charge by the meter. There are taxi ranks in many locations throughout the centre as is nearly impossible to hail one on the street, particularly at night. Local time and shop/attraction hours
At the time of ICMIF’s Centenary Conference, Rome will be on CEST (Central European Summer Time).
Opening hours in Rome are somewhat limited, and many stores close at lunchtime and reopen a few hours later. Nevertheless, you will always find souvenir shops, supermarkets and department stores open.
Most stores in Rome are open Monday through Saturday, from 09.00 to 13.00 or 13.30 and then reopen from 15,30 to 19.30. The shops on the main high streets do not close at lunchtime and usually close a little later in the evening compared to the other shops.
On the main shopping and business streets, clothing stores and department stores open on Sundays.
Most of the top attractions in Rome (like the Colosseum, Roman Fountain, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Novana) do not have a set schedule, as most of them are in the open air. Nevertheless, many open early and usually close at sunset.
The main museums and art galleries in Rome are open from around 08.30 am until 19.30.
Health insurance in Italy
UK citizens: UK citizens have access to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which will enable them to access Italian healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free if needed.
US, Canadian and Australian citizens: it is not compulsory for those citizens to be covered when traveling to Italy. Nevertheless, it is always strongly recommended.
Schengen area travel insurance: for those who require a visa to enter Italy or any other Schengen countries, travel insurance covering repatriation and medical expenses is compulsory and the necessary visa to enter Europe will not be issued unless you provide proof of suitable coverage.
Safety and security
Rome is generally a safe place, even for people travelling alone. There is very little violent crime, but a number of scams and pickpocketing that target tourists do take place. As in any other big city, it is better if you don't look like a tourist: avoid train stations at night, keep your camera or camcorder out of sight, and keep your money in a safe place.
Dress code
The dress code for all Conference sessions is smart business attire. For the welcome reception, it is smart casual. For the Gala Dinner, we would recommend elegant evening attire.
Green issues
To avoid printing of brochures/literature, ICMIF will share all the information needed by delegates on this website as it becomes available. When ready, ICMIF will also launch a conference app for delegates which will contain all the necessary information on the event. ICMIF also recycles lanyards and pass holders and kindly requests that delegates return them to ICMIF staff after the event.
Electricity
For Italy there are three associated plug types, types C, F and L. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins, plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side and plug type L is the plug type which has three round pins. Italy operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.
