Meet the 2015 Mining Indaba Bursary Recipients

Bursary Students

Rehaan Abdulla

Rehaan Abdulla is a twenty year old student that completed grade 12 in 2012 at the Nirvana Secondary School in Lenasia. He enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012 fora BSc Eng (Mechanical). After completing his first and second years successfully he is currently enrolled for his third year in a BSc Eng (Mechanical) at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is involved in his community through the Anti drug campaign, Valued citizens programme and the Muslims Aid programme. He loves soccer and cricket and making models with challenging problems.

Rehaan describes himself as a “hard working individual, that can prioritize and communicate effectively.I am a good leader, meticulous and am willing to put in extra hours to get a job done.I have always been curious as to how things works and that is what fuelled my passion for Engineering”

Sifiso Buthelezi

Sifiso Buthelezi is a 24 year old student that completed his grade 12 in 2008 at  Sunward Park High.  He commenced his studies in 2011 by enrolling  for a National Diploma (N Dip) in Mining Engineering at the University of Johannesburg.

In his first year he obtained three distinctions of the six enrolled subjects with an average of 72% (B average).    Thereafter he successfully completed his in-service training the AngloGold Ashanti Mine.  Last year Sifiso received recognition for exceptional achievement and his name will appear on the Dean’s Honors roll for 2014.   He obtained seven distinctions of the 12 registered subjects with an average of 73% (B average). 

Sifiso plays soccer in his spare time and is passionate about this sport.

Sifiso describes himself as “a motivated ambitious, hard working person who has a keen interest in mining that started when I was a young boy.  I am determined to follow my dreams and be successful in my career.  I want to apply my knowledge and skills that I gained in my studies to my working environment. “ 

Lerato Lebase

Lerato Lebase is a twenty one year old female student that was one of the 2011 top 100 Achievers of her senior certificate class in the Free State province. She continued with her Post School Education the following year, enrolling for a National Diploma (N Dip) in Mining Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. In her first year she obtained five distinctions of the twelve enrolled subjects with an average of 72% (B average). She successfully completed her in-service training in 2013 at the Black Mountain Mine in the Northern Cape. Last year Lerato received an academic merit recognition award from the Faculty after obtaining five distinctions of six enrolled subjects with an average of 76% (A average) in the first semester. She also received recognition for exceptional achievement and her name will appear on the Dean’s Honors roll for 2014. Lerato fills her spare time with reading, singing and mathematics.

Lerato describes herself as “a driven, motivated ambitious, hard working and self disciplined young person who is able to work cooperatively with others. My objective it to apply skills and knowledge obtained from higher education to the working environment. I find mining an interesting career and even more compelling after doing my practical training.”

Avhaluvhei Adolph Ramovha

Avhaluvhei Adolph Ramovha is a twenty two year old student that completed his grade 12 at the Tshikevha Christian School in 2010. He started his studies in a National diploma (N Dip) Analytical Chemistry the following year at the Durban University of Technology.In 2012 he changed both his course and university, transferring to a National Diploma (N Dip) Mining Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. In his first year Avhaluvhei obtained six distinctions of the twelve subjects registered with an average of 75% (A average).He successfully completed his required in-service training at the Blyvooruitzicht and Consolidated Murchhison Mines (Cons Murch Antimony and Gold mine) in 2013. In 2014 he obtained six distinctions ofsix registered subjects with an average of 78% ( A average)inthe first semester of 2014 and successfully completed his third year of studies. Avhaluvhei can also speak Sipendi, Xitsonga, basic Zulu and Afrikaans in addition toEnglish. He also likes reading. 


Avhaluvhei describes himself as a “well mannered young male student who is passionate about his academic development.I take every chance I get to improve my level of understanding.I interact well with my surrounding environment.I am capable of working in a team in which I can ensure participation and respect towards my colleagues.I can work with little or no supervision.Through my experience in the working environment I have exhibited my analytical decision making skills and I am certain that I will work safely and ensure the safety of the people I am working with.My objective is to join a company that will develop me while I contribute to its growth by applying my knowledge and skills if the mining discipline.”
