Special Presentations: World Bank Group & Partners – Mining and Sustainable Development Issues 8:30 – 10:15am in Cape Town International Convention Centre, Auditorium 2 Lifting the Lid on Africa’s Mineral Resources: The Role of Public Geodata Services Although recent discoveries have drawn attention to Africa’s abundant mineral riches, their true extent is hard to say. This is because the intensity of geological research and mineral exploration undertaken in Africa lags that of most other regions of the world. The session will discuss what we know already and what initiatives are being developed to lift the lid on Africa’s minerals. In particular, we will discuss what is being done to enhance the role of the public sector as a supplier of services to all stakeholders with an interest in minerals geo-data; that includes researchers, mineral explorers and producers, regulators, policy makers and the public at large.
____________________________________________________________________ 11:00am – 12:45pm in Cape Town International Convention Centre, Auditorium 2 New Standards in Extractives Transparency: Engagement by the Private Sector Last May, on the back of growing momentum, the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) introduced its New Standard, calling for a new level of engagement by governments, the industry and civil society. In parallel, transparent governance of the mining sector is embodied in new financial legislation in home countries and compacts among the G-8 and G-20. This session will focus on how the mining industry is embracing and accommodating the changes in reporting obligations under EITI in the context of the changing landscape of extractives transparency. We will hear from the Chair of EITI, Clare Short, as well as renowned experts at the corporate level and open the debate to those needing to know how this relates to their mining operations.

Gold Back to Gold : Money in the 21st century Gold is in a bull market, and its price therefore has much further to rise. National currencies are in a bear market compared to gold, so their purchasing power will continue to erode because of inflation and other monetary problems. Gold mining companies and the countries where they operate stand to benefit if they recognise gold’s potential and choose to ride this history-making tide.

Saving time & money through pro-active management of health, safety, community and environmental risks ERM research into mining projects showed that 46% missed their delivery date commitments between 2008 and 2013. The majority of these projects were delayed because of community opposition, environmental concerns, difficulty in obtaining permits and unfavourable commodity prices. The delays had far reaching consequences including budget overruns, loss of trust from stakeholders and negative shareholder sentiment. These issues also impact operational mines – one mining major recently disclosed that only 11% of their operations were meeting budgets. As the sector completes project reviews and develops plans as to which projects will get the go-ahead in the coming years, against the backdrop of: The ERM workshop brings together industry, financial and ERM points of view, in an interactive 2 hour workshop, to discuss practical solutions to these issues.

Keynote: Creating Win-Win Mining Scenarios: How Investors, Mining Companies and Governments can Build Sustainable Mining Models – Hon Colin Barnett MEc MLA Mining investment works best when there is a framework that allows for all stakeholders to share in success. Join Colin Barnett, Premier of Western Australia as he shares Australia’s successful and unique mining investment model and how African Mining can benefit from lessons learned around the globe. A sustainable mining model ensures investors have a consistent long term framework in which to invest and assess investment. Such model also ensures that mining companies understand and can manage the implications of investment codes and taxes. In turn, governments can capitalize on the resources of the country whilst simultaneously promoting ongoing investment into the sector with conviction and credibility.

Corporate White Paper Session – Bsi Steel Ltd. Steel for the African Mining Industry: Steel is an essential ingredient in the establishment, operation and maintenance of a mine. This is particularly critical in Africa, where infrastructure, availability and quality are often unpredictable. It is advisable for mining operations to establish a partner in the supply of such a critical commodity. The selection of such a partner depends largely on the capability and resources of the supplier.

Corporate White Paper Session – Partners in Performance South Africa Pty Capital projects – Getting the best bang for your buck: It is our experience that because engineering design teams often have different incentives to those of the companies/shareholders they are working for, most projects we encounter are based on sound engineering (ultimately, they will work), but there is often a disconnect between the design decisions in the project and the economic consequences of those decisions. Plainly speaking, your EPCM or internal design team often lack the incentive to maximise your NPV. Therefore, a project’s economics and investment returns can almost always be improved by systematically interrogating the main drivers of NPV (scale, capex, opex, time to first cash flow, etc.), challenging fundamental design assumptions and optimising the trade-offs between these drivers. To help our clients do this PIP deploys its Rigorous Optimisation of CapeX (ROCX) methodology, which is designed to optimise capital projects while they are still on the drawing board, and which has delivered outstanding results – in a few weeks substantially improving both the value (NPV) of projects and the confidence in that value – for both our major and more junior mining clients

Special Topic Session – The Challenge and Opportunity of Sustainable Development in Mining The need for, and desire of, mining companies to maximise benefits for local communities is quite clear. And yet, while many mining companies have bolstered their commitment to and understanding of sustainable development, the challenge that remains relates to implementation. Indeed, the means through which companies can actualise effective sustainable development initiatives remains relatively ambiguous, particularly due to the level of nuance and collaboration required. However, if solutions fit the local context and involve all relevant stakeholders, it is possible for companies to effect positive change – economically, environmentally and socially – while driving profitability. Within this context, DuPont Sustainable Solutions is hosting an executive forum to provide insight and spark dialogue on the challenges that face mining companies as they implement sustainable development strategies. Moreover, the discussion will focus on what mining companies can do to improve, and where they should focus in order to deliver concrete results. Participants will be able to interact with one another, share best practices and forge new contacts with executives of leading mining companies from around the world. DuPont comes to this event not only to share our experiences and best practices, but to learn from leading experts and practitioners, also to advocate improved sustainability and social value. Panel: Mining and communities: moving from conflict to resolution Evidence from preliminary analysis by ICMM suggests that conflicts between companies and communities may be on the increase. This not only undermines project stability, but also has the potential to limit companies’ contributions to social and economic development. In addition, there can be significant costs associated with conflicts between companies and communities, most obviously in terms of business disruption and the costs of staff time devoted to addressing conflicts. This panel will bring together organizations with experience of dealing with conflict to discuss how company-community conflicts arise, the challenges associated with such conflicts and practical steps that various parties can take to help prevent conflict arising or to mitigate adverse impacts. Key questions:

Panel: Responsible sourcing of materials: Global trends and challenges Consumer product manufacturers, governments and civil society organizations are increasingly seeking assurance that materials have been extracted in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Recent measures and due diligence requirements relating to conflict minerals are typical of this growing trend. The European Commission is exploring a potential EU initiative for responsible sourcing of minerals coming from conflict-affected and high risk areas. Key questions:
