The Latest in ICC 500 Storm Shelter and FEMA Safe Room Requirements
Attendees will recognize the importance of storm shelters and safe rooms as life-saving structures; learn the major requirements of ICC 500 and the differences between ICC 500-2014 and recently revised FEMA P-361 (2015); and understand FEMA’s role in educating the public and promoting safe rooms in the United States.
Presenters: Andrew Herseth PE SE, FEMA Building Science Branch and Pataya Scott, AECOM, Texas Tech University
Fire Door Systems, A Guide to Code Compliance
Attendees will learn the 5 wall types of the IBC; opening protective required in the 5 types; egress requirements and egress features of wide-span opening protective.
Presenter: David Dodge, McKeon Door
Depositions – What Not To Do
Building Officials and Inspectors worry about the codes and are dragged into depositions even when they are not involved. This will help keep them on course and get back to the job of protecting the public.
Presenter: John England, CBO, MCP, England Enterprises
How Real World Testing and Research Impacts Building Codes
Attendees will learn how IBHS plays a role in promoting stronger building codes in the United States; The value of real world testing on full-scale structures for all natural disasters; how research translates into improvements in building codes; and short and long term benefits to strengthening communities.
Presenter: Si Farvardin, IBHS
Floodplain Design, Construction, and Impacts on Floor Insurance
Session will describe floods, floodplains and the potential hazards to buildings; explain the differences between wet flood proofing and dry flood proofing techniques and acceptable applications, describe the role of flood openings in flood events resilient structures, and analyze the role of building compliance in securing lowering flood insurance rates and what mitigation solutions are available.
Presenter: Tom Little, CFM, GCP, Smart Vent Products, Inc.
Trends, Analysis, and Studies of Building Code Enforcement Efforts Across the Nation
Attendees will gain a better understanding of national trends in building code enforcement, department financing, staffing, workload, and be able to compare their own departments to the national trends to discover how they are progressing compared to their peers.
Presenter: Dale K. Thomure, CBO, CFM, ISO
Unforeseen and Unexpected Hazards with Interior Finishes
Attendees will be able to identify at least four fire tests used to evaluate interior finish materials; identify at least four interior finish materials for which ASTM E84 should not be the only fire test used to evaluate the materials; Identify the different heat release requirements in NFPA 265 and NFPA 286; and list at least four interior finish materials for which the IBC has revised the fire test requirements over the past several revision cycles.
Presenter: William E. Koffel, P.E., FSFPE, Koffel Associates
Fire-Retardant-Treated Wood and the IBC
Attendees will gain an understanding of what FRTW is, why it is allowed in noncombustible construction, what products are available, how to identify FRTW, product labeling, and uses allowed in the building code.
Presenter: David Bueche, Hoover Treated Wood Products
Lateral Bracing and Shear Walls in Light-Frame Structures
Session will equip attendees to describe how wind and seismic forces affect a structure, how wind and seismic forces are resisted in a structure, describe the impact of design on a structure’s ability to resist these forces, understand the basics of determining wall bracing amounts, determine when prescriptive site-built, prescriptive pre-manufactured equivalents, or engineered solutions can be used to meet code mandated structural requirements and more.
Presenter: Randy Shackelford, P.E., Simpson Strong-Tie
Preparing Your Maintenance Facility For Lighter Than Air Fueled Vehicles
Actual design considerations and how they apply to the modifications necessary.
Presenter: Corey Miller, Sierra Monitor Corp.
Digital Fabrication for Custom Homes: A Step in Making Construction Sites Safer
Attendees will understand how digital fabrication combined with on-site assembly can reduce job site hazards; discover how rapid visualization and clash detection through Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) can be used to increase job site safety and predictability; learn how the integration of constructability requirements and architectural design can lead to zero waste construction and radically reduced assembly time; and describe how a safer construction solution can be achieved using lessons learned from the automotive and aerospace industry.
Presenter: Charles Bovet, BONE Structure
Fluid Applied Air Barrier Membranes: Advances and Applications
Attendees will be able to discuss the impact of air leakage on building performance, distinguish between Fluid Applied Air Barrier performance properties based on their formulation chemistries, specify a Fluid Applied Air Barrier System to meet your project’s performance requirements and understand the importance of proper installation of fluid applied air barriers.
Presenter: Benjamin Meyer, RA, LEED AP, Dupont
