FAQs

Currency: For all the countries it´s the best to bring one of the common international currencies (USD, EUR or GBP) and change it in a forex bureaux. Your guide will take you to the best placed to change foreign currency. The most common currency is USD. In addition you can use international ATM machines (e.g. Barclays Bank, Stanbic Bank etc.) in larger towns (e.g. Accra, Cotonou, Lomé etc.), but it´s best to check with your bank to ensure your card will work.

Food: In Ghana, Togo and Benin (similar in most West African Countries) they eat a lot of rice, vegetables, fish and chicken. We recommend to budget around 15-30 USD per person for food per day, depending if you rather eat local or international food. A local meal costs around 5-10 USD, while an international meal costs around 10-20 USD. Of course in some international restaurants (especially in some of the hotels where you are staying, you can also find more expensive food, such as lobster etc.). Of course there are also some upscale restaurants which charge higher prices. Note - your tour guides/drivers will always provide enough mineral water in the vehicle, at no charge.

Weather: In October it´s mostly sunny and warm (around 30-35 degrees), with only few rain in between. Just in the North it can still rain sometimes. So it´s actually a great time to travel in West Africa!

Things to bring: next to your visas and yellow fever vaccination passport, we would recommend to check with your doctor for Malaria Prophylaxis and to bring some mosquito spray with deet - the higher he percentage of deet, the better. Eventually sunscreen and a sun hat are useful as well. Optional things to bring is a power bank (in case you take a lot of pictures with your phone) and a power plug adapter (for UK plugs) for electronic devices, but this can also be easily purchased upon arrival if needed.

Beach: The beach at Coconut Grove Beach Resort is located in Elmina is one of the nice beaches in Ghana! In general it is not recommended to swim in the ocean in Ghana due to the currents, but you can wet your feet in the water and if you want to swim, the hotel offers a nice pool!

Clothes: We would recommend to wear light clothes, but not too short for the ladies, since Ghana is still a bit more conservative (especially in the Northern Ghana), so maybe dresses / skirts closer to the knee will be fine. For tops / shoulders there are no restrictions. Sandals and a pair of walking shoes are recommended.
