Inviting All Students

Who is the TRCR?

The Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation (TRCR) originated in the early 1970's in response to a demonstrated need in British Columbia for greater government-industry communications in the area of environmental protection and reclamation associated with mining. Membership is drawn from the corporate sector; the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas (EMNG); BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO), the BC Ministry of Environment (MOE); Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Mining Association of British Columbia and British Columbia universities and colleges. Since 1977, the TRCR has annually sponsored the British Columbia Mine Reclamation Symposium to foster the exchange of information and ideas on reclamation.

TRCR Support for Students

Jake McDonald Scholarship for Mine Reclamation

In honour of Jake McDonald, former Senior Reclamation Inspector in the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, the Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation offers a total of $2,000 in scholarships to students registered at a university (undergraduate or graduate) or college in the province of British Columbia. Jake McDonald was largely responsible for the formation of the Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation. This committee significantly improved government - industry - academic communications in the areas of environmental protection and reclamation in mining.

The applying student must be involved in mine reclamation, pollution prevention, environmentally sound mine planning, or any aspect of mine land rehabilitation. The student must have a high academic standing and a genuine interest in the mining industry in the province and in maintenance of the environment of British Columbia. The student must be enrolled in a post secondary institute in British Columbia.

Students may be nominated by individuals, or candidates may apply directly. In the application, a one-two page proposal or a statement of interest, and a copy of a recent transcript must be included.

Support for Students at the BC Mine Reclamation Symposium

Students volunteering to help at the symposium will have their registration, tour and short course fees covered, rooms supplied (based on shared accommodation), attendance to the banquet and all speakers breakfasts and an additional $50.00 to help cover costs. In return, students will help with registration and other duties as required. Student volunteers are selected on a first come basis and must be enrolled in a post secondary institute in British Columbia or if attending a post secondary institute outside of British Columbia, their research must be focused in British Columbia. Please send an email to the Scholarship Committee Chair early (spring/ early summer) if interested, in order to secure a spot as these fill quickly.
