An overview of European and North American distribution systems that utilize slam shut valve technology as a primary or secondary means of overpressure/underpressure protection of stations. Discussion includes design and test standards from the European standard EN14382 which is a comprehensive design standard for slam shut valves used in applications up to 100 barg or 1450 psig. Included in this discussion is station design philosophy both in Europe and North American on how slam shut valves are implemented as a means of environmentally friendly overpressure and underpressure protection. Slam shuts can protect district stations from overpressure incidents with no release of natural gas to the atmosphere.
