Community Connection - Sustainability | May 7,  3:15 - 4 PM

Learn how members of SPE and affiliated organizations are taking efforts to not only improve
plastics sustainability, but educate others about plastics sustainability in manufacturing applications.

Kelvin Okamoto

Kelvin Okamoto is the CEO of Gen3Bio, Inc. and the President of Green Bottom Line, Inc.  He has his B.S. from Stanford University and PhD from Cornell University, both in Chemistry.  He serves on the Bioplastics Council for SPI, is secretary for the ASTM International subcommittee for environmentally degradable plastics and biodegradable plastics and has volunteered for many other organizations around biodegradable and bioplastics. 

Gen3Bio works toward commercializing biobased chemicals from feedstocks including algae and agricultural waste that can be used in biopolymers and Green Bottom Line consults with companies to ensure they remain sustainable and make more money while making green decisions.


Professor Margaret Sobkowicz:

Professor Meg Sobkowicz Kline is an assistant professor in Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  She has a B.S. from Columbia University and PhD from the Colorado School of Mines, both in Chemical Engineering.  She worked as a field engineer in the petroleum and municipal water treatment industries and is very interested in how humans impact the planet. 

Her expertise is in renewable polymers, plastics processing, nanocomposites, organic photovoltaics and electronics and her research focuses on the convergence of energy, sustainability, and materials.  She teaches a materials for renewable energy course, is heavily involved in the climate change initiative on campus, and recently was awarded a grant to help increase the participation of women in STEM!



Pilot Our Future | May 7, 4 - 5:30 PM

A collaborative, open discussion session moderated by Students and Young Professionals in the
industry to discuss ways to utilize SPE to navigate their professional and academic careers.



Plastics Race™ | May 8 , 12 - 2 PM

The Plastics Race™ is an app-driven scavenger hunt designed to entertain and educate any attendee—from students to veteran industry professionals while creating a networking and mentoring atmosphere between senior, professionals, young professionals and students.

Formed in teams of 3 or 4 people, you will search for QR codes placed in sponsoring booths. These codes will automatically populate a randomly generated question which will test the team’s knowledge in the fields of polymer science, polymer chemistry, plastics engineering and more. Questions can only be answered by visiting sponsors’ booths!

At the conclusion, the team with the most correct answers will be awarded a fantastic prize.
