Turning Data Into Actionable Information

Today, the PI System manages just under 1 billion data feeds across the 17,000 sites worldwide. With such volumes of data spread across the organization, the ultimate question is, how can an individual or group of individuals tap into and use everything that is available to them? Data on its own can be difficult to understand, combine, and share unless it has context that enables anyone in the organization to quickly comprehend, interpret and act on information. This session focuses on the best practices and required capabilities for sharing, standardizing and consistently enriching data from business and operations systems so that data is self-service and turned into actionable information at every level in the organization.

Using PI Notifications as a Loss Reduction Tool

Due to the exponential increase in the amount of information in the market (Big Data), the online monitoring of these variables demands management, taking into account that only determined conditions need immediate attention.

After the PI AF structuration, many conditions with high importance were choose to be monitored, among them, it is possible to cite the ore quality monitoring per sample, this action, for instance, avoids material losses and lack of conformity with client requirements, ore flow above the maximum allowed, what avoids the line obstruction, equipment current above the work current, avoiding that the equipment brakes due to vibrations and consequent fatigue and the OPC server/client stations monitoring, what avoids information losses.

The next step is to send this information through text messages to the main stakeholder’s cellphones.

Juvenor Pereira da Silva Jr - ONS

Information as input for the Operation of the National Interconnected System

Marcelo Palácio – Coelce/Endesa

Load Loss Alert

The presentation will address the project goals to improve security, company image, operational excellence, customer satisfaction and, ultimately, have an economic gain.

The problem in discussion is that when there is a Load Loss, the first normalization takes a long time, when automation is not available in mid voltage. The occurrence is detected via customers alert and take a long time for the team to reach the point where the problem happened. Their plan is to act on the DEC (equivalent duration of interruption per consuming unit) in the reclosers and main connections output, which is at 14% total now.

The way this problem is being treated, nowadays, is by using real-time measurements of current from the PI System. When a variation in the current values occurs, there is a generation of an alert via a routine in Microsoft Excel, the operator analyzes the alert and compares it to the loss variation and with the probable blackout and then he proactively sends an inspection team to the section.

The application is very simple and there is very few concrete results, but it has great potential in the energy distribution.

Márcia C. - Odebrecht Ambiental

BI - Corporate Visibility of Indicators and Data Organization by Assets

The Odebrecht Ambiental is a decentralized company, where each unity (concession) has business management autonomy. The concessions have different maturity and size scales, some of them representing the sanitation of only one city with 300 thousand citizens and others representing an entire state, such as Tocantis. There, are as well, different automation stages and a variety of processes, for example, reuse water, UASB water treatment, activated sludge treatment, water consumption treatment and so on.

Due to this decentralization, the necessity of visualize the company data in a unique and unified way emerged. As a response to this necessity, in 2012, an Operational Control Center was built in the Odebrecht Ambiental installations in Alphaville. Where it is possible to visualize the Effluent and Water Treatment Plants, through Scada, and the management information through the BI Portal. In this portal, indicators from different areas were shared, such as, financial area, human resources, supplies, engineering, sustainability, security, health and so on. However, company’s operational efficiency indicators, at that moment, were few and manual.

The immediate benefit from PI System is the indicators visualization of operational efficiency, in a direct and simple form, for all Odebrecht Ambiental units that have automation. The future benefit will be the information utilization of the data stored historically in the PI System for projects such as Losses Control, Energy Efficiency and Source Water Protection Program, project in study in Odebrecht Ambiental.

Ronaldo Manzano - Solvay

Generating Value with the Use of the PI Live Library

Sometimes we need to think outside the box and be persistent to find solutions that are truly real and bring considerable results to the company. It is known how difficult and complex is the construction of rigorous mass and energy balances, having in mind that we need complex enthalpy calculations, dozens of derivations and extensive thermodynamics tables.

This case will present the path we took from the problem detection in the field to the evaluated solutions and how useful was to think outside the box, without going directly to the easy, known solutions and, consequently, tempting. The path was long before finding a solution that was truly simple, easy to understand and editable by anyone in any Solvay site.

And more importantly, we utilized native OSIsoft resources, however, that were unknown.
