Volunteer

Evaluators are an important part of making our 4-H competitions successful

As an evaluator, you help youth improve by giving them feedback based on a standard evaluation rubric and written constructive feedback. Each contest has supporting guides and instructions for submitting effective evaluation metrics and feedback.

Who can be an Evaluator

Adults and Senior 4-H Members (ages 16 and up)

You do not have to be a registered 4-H Adult Volunteer to volunteer as an Evaluator. You can sign up for virtual Interview Contest (May 4-5-6) too! Please see below for information about orientations for Evaluators and Room Hosts.

Senior 4-H Youth (ages 16 and up) are also welcome to volunteer as an Evaluator.

State 4-H Fashion Revue Evaluators

Evaluators are an important component of State Fashion Revue. Your feedback will help our contestants grow and improve their skills in sewing and modeling their work.

Help 4-H’ers grow and improve their skills by sharing constructive feedback. You will be impressed at the skill our contestants are already demonstrating with their projects!

Do I have to have sewing experience?

No! If you have experience with fashion, sewing and leathercraft that would be a plus, but it’s not required. All evaluators will receive instructions during the orientation on May 17 before the contest begins.

Interview Contest Evaluator

We are looking for people with experience in interviewing or hiring. Your feedback will help participants improve their interviewing skills. Please review the Interview Contest manual and job descriptions on the Interview Contest page.

The Virtual Interview Contest will be held on May 4, 5, 6, 2025. The in-person Interview Contest will be held in-person only on May 17, 2025 at UC Davis.

After registration has closed, you will be contacted with details relating to the position. For the virtual contest, an orientation will be provided on May 1st at 6:30pm. For the in-person contest, an orientation will be provided on the day of the event.

Insect ID Contest Evaluator

We are looking for 4-5 people to volunteer with the Insect Identification Contest to help youth check-in/register, monitor contest participants, and help score answer sheets

This will be held in-person only on May 17, 2025 at UC Davis.

Virtual State Presentations Evaluators

May 4-8, 2025 Via Zoom

To ensure an appropriate evaluator-to-presenter ratio, we have modified our virtual presentations registration process. We will open Evaluator registrations in March. Presenter registration will be contingent on the number of evaluators already registered. Starting Monday, March 10, 2025, and continuing every Monday through April 21, 2025, at 6 PM we will release slots for youth participants based on the number of evaluators we have registered. Registration for presenter slots will operate on a first-come basis.

Evaluators

Evaluators observe youth presentations and provide written feedback to help youth improve their public speaking abilities. Evaluators take the perspective that they are an educator and are reviewing presentations to offer insights on what youth are doing well and where they need improvement.

Before Virtual Presentations:

Attend an evaluator orientation: Virtual Evaluator/Room Host Orientation: Friday, May 2, 2025, 6:00-7:30 pm via Zoom
Become familiar with the 4-H Presentation Manual Revised January 2021 the Presentation Manual Addendum and the ADDENDUM: UC 4-H Presentation Manual 2025.
Complete the Presentation Evaluator Certification online course by logging in/creating your account and providing your county's enrollment key.

During Virtual Presentations:

Evaluate up to 7-10 presentations during each 2-hour time slot selected.
Complete the digital evaluation form and provide written positive and constructive feedback to help each presenter improve.

Youth Room Host

Youth room hosts help ensure a smooth functioning set of presentations. In the virtual Presentation Events, they will have Zoom "Host" responsibilities.

Attend a room host orientation:
- Virtual Evaluator/Room Host Orientation: Friday, May 2, 2025, 6:00-7:30 pm via Zoom
- In-Person Evaluator/Room Host Orientation: May 17, 2025, 9:00-9:30 am or 1:00-1:30 pm at SFD
Become familiar with the 4-H Presentation Manual Revised January 2021 the Presentation Manual Addendum and the ADDENDUM: UC 4-H Presentation Manual 2025.
Become familiar with the State Presentation Day Room Host Guidelines
For virtual presentations, become familiar with "Host" controls in Zoom.
Introduce the presenters and give the presenters any needed assistance.
Ask the evaluators if they are ready for the next presenter.
