(In-person only event)
Date: November 12, 2025 - November 13, 2025

Organized by: ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture
ABSTRACT DEADLINE EXTENDED to 1/3/2025!!
About the Event
The 23rd International ASTM/ESIS Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics (44th National Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics) will be held November 12, 2025 - November 13, 2025. The symposium is organized by ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture, and is co-organized by the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) Technical Committees TC11 High Temperature Mechanical Testing Committee, and TC21 Hydrogen Embrittlement and Transport. It will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atlanta, Georgia, United States in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the ASTM E08 committee. The language of the symposium will be English.
Objective and Scope
This symposium specifically aims to focus on environmental effects in fatigue and fracture of all types of materials.
It is intended to be a forum for exchange of ideas, test methods, data, and analysis methods with a focus on current issues related to fatigue and fracture in aggressive environments, including environmentally assisted cracking, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement and high temperature fracture. Addressing topical concerns of energy security, transport, and quality of life, will depend heavily on expanded understanding of environmental durability, in all groups of structural materials and engineered components; ranging from conventional metals and composites, to additively manufactured and hybrid materials. As such there is currently strong commercial interest and demand for data in these areas of research, so it is of great value to promote more dissemination of both novel work and established research which was previously only of interest to narrow audiences.
This symposium also seeks to bring together academics, industry researchers, and research organizations to collaboratively address the key areas pertaining to fatigue and fracture mechanics in aggressive environments. There is an opportunity for established workers in previously niche areas to make extant work known and share the “state of the art” with new workers entering the field. Equally, workers on novel techniques and new materials need a good forum of peers with whom to discuss findings.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Environmentally Assisted Cracking (EAC) in 7XXX Alloys
- Stress corrosion cracking & corrosion fatigue
- Hydrogen embrittlement
- Fatigue & fracture in cryogenic environments
- High temperature fracture and creep behavior
- Thermomechanical fatigue & creep-fatigue
- Effects of radiation damage on fracture and fatigue properties
- Hydrogen transportation and high-pressure hydrogen storage
- Dynamic & high strain rate fracture
M.R. Mitchell Student Presentation Forum
Graduate and undergraduate students are cordially invited to the ASTM Committee E08 sponsored student presentation competition to be held in Atlanta, GA the week of November 10, 2025. The competition will be held as a part of the 23rd International ASTM/ESIS Symposium on Fatigue & Fracture Mechanics and in conjunction with the meeting of the ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture.
Presentations concerning any aspect of fatigue and fracture mechanics are invited. Participants are asked to prepare an abstract in addition to the presentation, but full papers are not associated with the student presentation forum.
If selected to present, each student presenter may receive:
- Travel support from ASTM Committee E08 for your stay in Atlanta, GA*
- Access to all E08 committee meetings on November 10th to November 11th, 2025
- Access to 23rd International ASTM/ESIS Symposium (registration fees will be waived)
- One-year free membership in ASTM International, including an on-line subscription to the Standardization News magazine
The winning presenter may receive a $200 prize and a commemorative award plaque!
For further instructions on how to submit your abstract and the Chair contact information, please scroll down to the Student Presentation Forum Abstract Submission section of this page.
*If needed and eligible, ASTM Committee E08 will reimburse students for hotel room costs (lodging and room taxes and fees only) for up to three nights. There must be two presenting students per room (coordinated by the Forum Chair). If a student does not share a room, they will only receive a 50% reimbursement of the total room cost. A student must be the presenter of their work at the forum to be reimbursed. Reimbursement may be subject to legal and other restrictions.
Sponsorship Opportunities
In an effort to keep the registration fees at a price point that will allow everyone to attend, the symposium chairs are seeking sponsors to help offset those costs. Sponsorships are being accepted through May 31, 2025. For more information about sponsorship, please click here.
Symposium Abstract Submission
IMPORTANT! The instructions in this section are ONLY for those who wish to participate in the SYMPOSIUM. If you wish to present in the Student Presentation Forum, please scroll down to the Student Presentation Forum Abstract Submission section for those instructions.
To participate in the symposium, authors must submit 2 to 3-page abstract using the ASTM Extended Abstract template provided in the Abstract Submission Portal no later than January 3, 2025. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.
The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature, nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that your abstract submission is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The symposium chairs will notify you via email by January 17, 2025 of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author will be requested to submit a final abstract a few months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.
Publication Information
Based on the technical quality of the abstracts, presenters may be contacted to submit a full paper for the planned special issues of ASTM’s Materials Performance and Characterization (MPC). You will be notified by January 31, 2025, if the Editors would like you to submit a full paper for a special issue. Papers will be peer reviewed prior to publication in any special issue.
Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the special issue are due online at the ASTM Editorial Office no later than July 31, 2025. The corresponding author will receive a copy of their paper in an electronic format. All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost.
Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers. The special issue will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.
Student Presentation Forum Abstract Submission
IMPORTANT! The instructions in this section are intended for ONLY those who wish to participate in the STUDENT PRESENTATION FORUM.
To participate in the presentation forum, students must submit an abstract of no more than 300 words to the Student Forum Chair, Zachary D. Harris, Ph.D., at zdh13@pitt.edu, no later than July 31, 2025. The Chair will be in contact with you shortly after this abstract deadline.
Technical Program
A technical program (presentation times, paper titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on the ASTM website by September 2025.
Registration
Registration opens approximately 10 weeks before the start of the symposium.
