Welcome and COE Executive Council Roundup

As members of mission-driven organizations, we are stewards of work that has spanned centuries: dismantling inequalities to support communities, families and individuals to thrive. Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, Chief Movement Officer at Feeding America, will speak about why now is the time to reimagine our mission as a movement and to engage in work that will transform lives.

Gaining Inspiration in the Face of Adversity

It's no secret that we all go through adversity. In this session, Chris Singleton will share his keys to: Survive, Pivot, Adapt and Thrive (S.P.A.T) through all of life's obstacles. Chris knows firsthand how to overcome the unthinkable with a mindset of resiliency and understanding that we may not be able to choose what happens to us, but we can always control our responses. Chris' response in the aftermath of his mother being murdered during the Emmanuel Nine Massacre while he was in college.

South Carolina's Story of Social Change Through Conflict

Advancement is the deliberate act to achieve greater effectiveness by developing, improving and reinforcing strategies, structures and processes. As we pivot into the next century of our organization, we are all committed to our collective advancement and the unifying bond that is our Goodwill. This powerful fireside chat on South Carolina’s Story of Social Change Through Conflict will help us gain a better understanding of how healthy conflict is evitable for growth and advancement. We will navigate the tragedy that transformed a community, and a state. We will hear the powerful voices of Chris Singleton, the son of Emanuel Nine victim, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton; Dr. Cleveland Sellers retired president of Vorhees College and iconic civil rights activist along with Bakari Sellers, former State Representative and CNN commentator. This session will be moderated by Tamara King, Library Executive in South Carolina.

Learning and Leading Together

Conflict in life and in the workplace is inevitable, no matter how much we wish it wasn’t. At its core, conflict is a communication problem. Effective communication starts with how we listen – actively, nonverbally signaling that you are interested in what the other person has to say, not just waiting for your turn to speak. By learning and practicing skillful communication, we will gain a greater understanding of how conflict can lead to growth and positive change for CEOs, their teams and the network. This session will be highly engaging, so come prepared to participate and become better leaders.

A Stronger Future Together

Join Goodwill Industries International President & CEO Steve Preston as he reflects on the power of a shared commitment to our purpose in uniting us for a stronger future together. He is joined by Jeanette Hoyer (Muskegon, MI) who will share the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in our evolution.
