Lawyers and judges played important roles in 20th Century America’s civil rights era, but many such stories have been lost to history. One tragic event in 1946 had a particularly significant impact. On October 24, join the Honorable Richard M. Gergel, U.S. District Judge, as he discusses this event and his book Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring.

Unexampled Courage explores the impact of the blinding of Sergeant Isaac Woodard, an African American veteran, and the subsequent racial awakening of President Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring. Gergel traces their influential roles in changing the course of America’s civil rights history, including both Briggs v. Elliott and Brown v. Board of Education. Light refreshments will be served after the program.

This event is presented by the David F. and Constance B. Girard-diCarlo Center for Ethics, Integrity and Compliance at Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and Troutman Pepper with additional funding provided by the Charles Koch Foundation.

We look forward to seeing you!
