John Murray, Streetscapes Coordinator, City of South Perth

The City of South Perth has a highly successful plant nursery that produces most of the City’s trees for planting into streets, parks and natural areas. This ensures that adequate stock of the right species and vigour are provided specific to the needs of the City. In 1998 the nursery was restored and put into plant production after a period of hiatus. Each year the Council operated nursery produces high quality stock for its own and neighbouring Council’s uses: 200 exotic trees & 600 street trees for City of South Perth, 300 trees for the City of Canning, 1,600 trees for the Town of Victoria Park and 130,000 native species tubestock and pots for revegetation, parks and gardens projects.

The City has plans to expand the nursery’s operations and plant producing capacity with people, equipment and built facilities in the coming year; and have recently gained nursery standard accreditation. John Murray, the City’s Streetscapes Coordinator, is passionate about urban forestry. Hear how he spearheaded the reinvigoration of the City’s nursery to make it the successful production model it is today, and why it is so important to grow quality local government suitable plant stock.

Meet at the rear of the Hyatt Regency Perth, corner of Plain Street and Terrace Road: Bus Tour

9:45am - 12:00pm.  Bus leaves at 9.45am

Jon Vines, Manager of Project Services, City of Bayswater

Maylands Waterland is a much-loved water facility that was constructed in the 1970s. Due to its ageing infrastructure and Australian Safety Standards, the City of Bayswater has revitalised the facility into an all-abilities accessible aquatic play space inspired by Swan River ecology and ensuring it complements the environmentally sensitive area.  The $7m Waterland features local native flora and fauna and includes a leisure pool, splash pad, water creek, wading pool, play areas, accessible toilets, change rooms, shade sails, grassed areas, community picnic areas with barbecues, mobile catering areas, fencing and self-closing gates, redeveloped public toilets at the boat ramp and improved localised living stream outflows to the Swan River.  The design incorporates bioengineering, ensuring the facility does not negatively impact the health and ecological value of the Swan River.

The very popular Skate and BMX track at Wotton Reserve has recently been relocated to make way for the Morley train station project.  $2.5m state government funding has seen the skate and BMX facility moved to the eastern corner of the Reserve and upgraded to include WA’s biggest half pipe and a range of additional ramps and roll-ins that features elements that rivals some of the best skate parks in the country.  While many of the elements from the original park were retained, community consultation has guided the features and surrounding supporting infrastructure.  Join Jon Vines, Manager Recreation who will discuss the planning, design, construction, and management of these outstanding City of Bayswater projects.
