Cloud-Native Geospatial Outreach Event

19-20 April, 2022

The last few years have seen a quiet revolution in the way geospatial data is stored, processed and analyzed. Several small communities of developers and advanced users are leveraging the near-infinite compute and storage capabilities of the cloud to reinvent geospatial workflows from the ground up. This new way of working is called ‘Cloud-Native Geospatial’, and you can learn all about it from the leaders of these communities at a free, virtual event on April 19th and 20th.

 

What's Cloud Native Geospatial?

Cloud-native Geospatial is a new way of working with spatial data that is centered around a set of new standards focused on cloud-based access. 

  • Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) extends the GeoTIFF format to easily stream imagery, DEM’s and derivative raster products online.
  • Zarr excels at storage of large N-dimensional typed arrays on the cloud, and is used extensively for climate and weather modeling
  • Cloud Optimized Point Cloud (COPC) extends the LAZ format to stream vast amounts of point cloud data online.
  • SpatioTemporal Asset Catalogs (STAC) organize the above formats for searchability, providing a common, accessible metadata language to enable discovery.

On top of these standards are a rapidly growing ecosystem of innovative tools, data and workflows that are enabling a number of incredible new capabilities. The overall goal is to leverage the cloud to radically simplify the effort needed to make location information Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).

Event Format

To bring the community together to learn, engage, and build the future, this event will consist of Overviews, Lightning Talks, and Tutorials. All sessions of the engagement will be recorded and available to anyone (free registration required).

Overviews

Each foundational standard will have a 20 minute talk explaining who it works and giving an overview of the ecosystem.

Lightning Talks

These 5-minute informational sessions will be grouped into 60 minute sessions highlighting the array of uses and tools in cloud-native geospatial.

Tutorials

These 60 minute sessions will provide participants the opportunity to learn more about a particular standard or tool.
