It is safe to say that 2020 was a year unlike any other, as we lived through two urgent crises that captured the world’s attention. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd sparked changes to how we address issues of race, racism, diversity, equity and inclusion within institutions of all types. We will discuss some of those changes along a spectrum from “Bare Minimum” to “Aspirational” using examples that apply to universities as well as our corporate partners. We will also invite discussion of best practices from those who have examples to share from their own experiences.
2020 has brought about disruption, ambiguity, and opportunities for business schools and companies across the world. Hear from a panel that includes the dean of a business school, the director of a career center, and an employer as they synthesize and hypothesize about what they have experienced, how they have responded, and what they foresee in the future. Discussion topics include industry trends, interfacing with employers, and how best to prepare students.
In addition to our keynote and plenary sessions, we look forward to engaging in breakout sessions. These sessions allow attendees to share in smaller groups about topics of interest. Some sessions have presentations and then sharing opportunities; others are faciltiated round table discussions.

Supporting EQ Development in International Students: From Admissions to Graduation and Beyond |
Karissa Rusu
|
The Weston Career Center adapted their programming throughout the pandemic to engage a highly talented, predominantly international population of graduate business students at each point in the student lifecycle to support the achievement of their career goals. In fall 2020, over 80% of the Specialized Masters Programs intake was international students, most of which were from China. While international students commonly face unique challenges due to immigration status, U.S. employers’ unease with work authorizations and cultural barriers that prevent students from building professional network in a U.S. context, additional hurdles were encountered this past year due to travel restrictions and closed consulates. Presenters will share key strategies to support students’ EQ development including orientation content ideas for incoming students and programming initiatives for current students while also touching on ways to invest in international student alumnis. In addition, presenters will highlight how strategic partnerships across departments and among faculty fostered effective initiatives for students. Participants will walk away with practical tactics to adapt within their own context and apply a coordinated cross-department approach to empower students in an evolving, global and virtual landscape. |
