Workshop 1 – Discussions on key mass gathering topics

This half-day workshop is open to members of the WHO Collaborating Centres, the WHO Virtual International Advisory Group on Mass Gatherings and the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (Mass Gathering Section), as well as other WCDEM delegates.
Three experts will present on key topics related to mass gatherings. The presentations will be followed by 20 minutes of discussion. One paper will concern various aspects related to the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in West Africa, including lessons learnt from the 2015 African Cup of Nations held in Equatorial Guinea in January and February 2015. Another presentation will be by Dr Ben Steyn, formerly Chemical and Biological Defence Advisor to the Surgeon General in South Africa. His presentation will be on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence during mass gatherings. A third presentation is being confirmed.

Workshop 2 – International Delphi Project on a Minimum Data Set for Mass Gathering Health (MGH)

This half-day workshop is open to members of the WHO Collaborating Centres, the WHO Virtual International Advisory Group on Mass Gatherings and the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (Mass Gathering Section), as well as other WCDEM delegates.
The workshop is related to the International Delphi Project currently underway which aims to develop consensus on key concepts and data items related to Mass Gathering Health. This work has been undertaken on behalf of the WHO by the Flinders University WHO CC on Mass Gatherings and High Visibility/High Consequence Events and has been managed by a team of 9 international collaborators from Australia, Canada and the UK.

FRAMEWORKS FOR CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN DISASTER HEALTH

This 2-day workshop will assist health professionals in conducting research of any of the health aspects associated with a disaster. Participants will be introduced to standardized terminology, the Disaster Logic Model, and five (5) Frameworks that will provide the structure needed to organize and undertake the study of the epidemiology of a disaster, or to evaluate the interventions provided during any phase of a disaster. Exercises in applying these frameworks and the Disaster Logic Model to specific disaster studies will underscore their utility and provide experience in their use. A review of participants’ proposed potential disaster studies will allow clarification of the application of the Model and the Frameworks.
