Security is everyone’s business" may be a popular truism in the sport industry, but how many sport security managers can honestly say this philosophy is practiced by the organization. Some organizations have regular incidents in which employees simply disregard security rules and regulations. Sometimes, even the leaders of an organization will disobey security and safety rules out of a sense of entitlement-these rules are for employees, not executives. The sport organization security’s success is determined by the daily practices of everyone in the organization. This presentation will talk about how to maintain a robust program.

Adding entertainment districts as an extension of sport venues has revolutionized the way fans experience sports. Franchise owners, University President’s, brands and sponsors are now able to reach their fans and communicate their message to consumers year round. In the process, sport-anchored entertainment districts are revitalizing cities with mixed use development of retail, residential, office, hotels and casinos.

A key component for those responsible of people in public spaces, is an understanding of the principles and applications of crowd safety and risk analysis. Using case studies of the Detroit urban development project and the BYU project, the presenters will demonstrate how the effects of design, information and management systems can influence the crowd’s behavior when the crowd reaches critical mass. This presentation will give six take-away’s on how to plan for and manage crowds in normal and emergency situations.

Good design is a team effort. It’s vital from the outset for the design team to listen carefully to key stakeholders from the local community to the investors and from the boardroom to the fans. This collaborative approach helps design the best solution and improve a project’s chance of success. This panel will discuss the major challenges in venue operations. What changes are there in design and technology over the last decade? What are the next “big thing” in venue design and technology in the next decade?

Collaboration is a necessary foundation for dealing with both natural and technological hazards and disasters and the consequences of terrorism when dealing with sporting events. During this presentation the importance of collaboration is stressed, and recommendations are offered on how to improve the amount and value of collaborative activities. New leadership strategies are recommended that derive their power from effective strategies and the transformational power of a compelling vision, rather than from hierarchy, rank, or standard operating procedures.

Post-incident critiques often confirm that experience gained during exercises is the best way to prepare teams to respond effectively to an actual emergency. Attendees will participate in an exercise designed to engage team members and get them working together to manage the response to a realistic hypothetical incident. The goal of the exercise is to enhance knowledge and understanding of current plans and procedures, allow attendees to improve their own performance, and identify opportunities to improve capabilities to respond to real world events.
