Description: In the past 20 years, the significance of dietary and systemic causes of dental erosion has come to be appreciated. Erosion can be difficult to detect in its early stages, but can have a devastating impact on the oral cavity if left untreated. Acid assault by both the modern diet and by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have contributed to an increased prevalence of erosion. General dentists must become knowledgeable of this topic in order to educate their patients on how to prevent erosion and how to treat it when it does occur.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize and quantify erosion lesions in progressive stages of severity.
- Explain the impact of diet on dental erosion.
- Explain in simple terms why GERD can be a threat to oral and systemic health.
- Describe how patients can avoid acid reflux related dental erosion.
- List some measures to prevent dental erosion.
