Description: Part 1 of this course will introduce the attendant all aspects of orofacial pain, primarily focusing on the temporomandibular joint disorders. It will review the arthrogenous disorders, myogenous disorders, internal derangements, as well as other uncommon joint conditions. The goal is to understand pain mechanisms and dysfunction in the orofacial structures, thereby allowing dentists to make appropriate diagnoses and treat accordingly. This session will cover the etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of orofacial pain disorders. In addition, this course will review the relationships between myogenous and arthrogenous disorders, non-odontogenic sources of toothache, headaches, and cervical pain.
Learning Objectives:
- How to recognize and screen patients with orofacial pain and dysfunction, including temporomandibular joint disorders.
- The underlying pain mechanisms and dysfunction of the orofacial structures.
- How to make common orofacial pain diagnoses.
