Data Protection - The GDPR Update (post referendum) |
The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the most significant development to happen in data protection law for over twenty years. Do you know what's expected of you and how to prepare for its arrival?
To be enforced from the 25th May 2018, the GDPR will introduce substantial changes to data protection legislation and its application in the European Union and beyond. Businesses that aren't compliant will face major increases in potential penalties.
In spite of the Brexit referendum result it is clear that the majority of UK organisations, especially the private sector, will need to comply with much, if not all of the GDPR. The most important thing you can do is start preparing sooner, rather than later. While not every organisation will necessarily need a data protection officer, it's important to ensure that your business has the right people in place to help you understand and meet the requirements of the regulation.
This half-day course will consider the implications of Brexit for the GDPR and address the principal changes to be introduced. It will help you decide on the steps you and your business should be taking now. The course assumes general background knowledge of the topic.
Learning outcomes:
To be aware of the possible implications for data protection resulting from leaving the European Union
To use the key terminology defined in the General Data Protection Regulation
To be aware of the main obligations specified in the General Data Protecton Regulation
To know and interpret the data protection principles
To understand data subject rights
To be aware of the penalties specified in the General Data Protection Regulation
Certificated Training
As a result of the GDPR, it will become mandatory for some organisations to employ a Data Protection Officer (DPO). The DPO will have several duties and be required to have suitable professional qualifications. By employing a qualified data protection practitioner, organisations can demonstrate to regulators that they take data protection issues seriously and are adhering to the new Regulation.
Update are monitoring the implications of Brexit for GDPR requirements and if there should be a formal Data Protection Officer we intend to develop an accredited course to satisfy this in early 2017. For further information please contact Tessa Malcolm via update@lawscot.org.uk
