The Living Heart Project
What is The Living Heart Project?
The Living Heart project is a robust 3D heart simulation model and tool that bypasses the need for human models and testing by simulating an exact replica of the heart, imitating its unique electrical impulses, muscle fiber contractions and potential abnormalities. The realistic heart model can quickly explore a variety of treatment options that can be evaluated by the simulation, and the best option will be identified by the software. From this, clinicians will be able to provide more informed patient care through access to state of the art technologies, thereby gaining intimate knowledge through clinical observation and the practical use of devices and medical intervention. This all empowers clinicians to effectively identify those most at risk and prevent trauma from happening. The Living Heart Project aims to connect the individual efforts of leading cardiovascular researchers, device developers, and medical practitioners through 3D modelling and simulation. The ultimate goal of the project is to advance computational science to revolutionize bio-sciences and cardiovascular medicine.
The Living Heart Project moves healthcare onto a more advanced level by allowing the simulation of real biological processes in a virtual environment, also known as in silico medicine. Technology advancements in the healthcare industry are often too siloed from engaging real-time collaboration between researchers, clinicians, regulators and the industry. The Living Heart Project enables real-time collaboration between medical and engineering professionals, as well as robust data management, and security. The development of safe and effective cardiovascular products and treatments is also advanced by uniting engineering, scientific, and biomedical expertise to translate cutting edge science to provide personalized, interventional patient care. By developing the foundational technology to fully simulate human biomechanics, healthcare devices and procedures in other medical fields will also look to benefit in terms of reliability. Gradually, the whole body and all its organs can be simulated. 3D modelling is the stepping stone that will provide a glimpse as to what new technology advancements and potentially do for the future of surgery.
