Rev. Dr. William P. Brown

Bill Brown is the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. His writings explore intersecting issues of ecology, justice, faith, and science from various biblical perspectives. In a career that spans over 30 years, Brown has written several books including Wisdom’s WonderThe Seven Pillars of CreationSeeing the PsalmsSacred SenseHandbook to Old Testament Exegesis, and most recently, Deep Calls to Deep: The Psalms in Dialogue amid Disruption. Much of his work seeks to promote constructive dialogue among diverse participants to foster mutual understanding and equity.

Known as an “evangelist of wonder,” Brown loves to  teach biblical interpretation as an exercise in wonder--ever open to being surprised by the text, by God, by creation, and by each other. Such an approach invites interdisciplinary approaches, some far afield of traditional biblical research. As an example, Brown spent a year studying the social and theological implications of astrobiology at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton.

Brown is currently working on a Psalms commentary for the Old Testament Library series, and on a collaborative project on biblical aesthetics with Dr. Ralph Watkins. He is ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
