Beth Breeze

Centre for Philanthropy - University of Kent
Beth is the Director of the Centre for Philanthropy at the University of Kent in the UK where she leads research and teaching on all aspects of philanthropy, defined as the giving of both time and money. Current research projects include a study of the profession of fundraising, a comparison of giving circles in the UK and USA, an evaluation of endowment building by heritage organisations and a project on patterns of engagement in the giving of time and money across the life-course.
 
She teaches an undergraduate module in volunteering, and postgraduate module in fundraising and philanthropy at the University of Kent. She is also accredited to teach a professional qualification: the Introductory Certificate in Fundraising. She is passionate about public engagement and ensuring that her Centre’s research findings are available to practitioners, so also spends a lot of time visiting charities to present research and doing media work.

Russell James III
Director of Graduate Studies in Charitable Planning
Texas Tech University
Russell James III brings a unique variety of perspectives to the study of charitable giving and charitable planning. He currently serves at the Director of Graduate Studies in Charitable Planning at Texas Tech University – the first graduate program in the United States of America to focus specifically on planned giving and charitable financial planning.
 
He graduated, cum laude, from the University of Missouri School of Law, where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review. After working as the Director of Planned Giving for Central Christian College (Moberly, Missouri) for six years, where he also built a successful law practice limited to estate and gift planning, he received his PhD in Consumer and Family Economics from the University of Missouri where his dissertation was on charitable giving.
 
He has over 100 publications in print or in press in academic journals, conference proceedings, professional periodicals, and books. He writes regularly for Advancing Philanthropy, the magazine of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
 
Beth Kanter
Beth Kanter is a well-established international not-for-profit thought leader. She has more than three decades of experience in the not-for-profit sector in technology, training, and capacity building and has facilitated training for not-for-profits on every continent in the world (except Antarctica). She is an expert in participatory facilitation techniques such as design thinking, open space, peer learning, and others, both online and offline. She is an in-demand keynote speaker and workshop leader.
 
Beth’s past and current clients include Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kauffman Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Packard Foundation, Brainerd Foundation, Knight Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Knight Digital Media Center, Edutopia, HHS, Save the Children, and others. Julia Keady

The Xfactor Collective
Julia Keady is the driving force behind The Xfactor Collective, an Australian-first community of, and for, social changemakers and game-changers. Having experienced and witnessed severe burnout in hundreds of changemakers - including passionate suppliers to sector (often overlooked as changemakers) - she imagined and has now successfully tested phase 1 of the collaborative dual marketplace model that is the Collective.

Her mission for the next 20 years: eradicate changemaker burnout. How: doing change differently, collaboratively. Together.

When she’s not on that mission, Julia is an advocate for women’s leadership, rural/regional Australia, social entrepreneurship/enterprise, and cheering on emerging social innovators. She draws on a diverse tool belt having worked extensively across philanthropy, charity, social enterprise, corporate and media/publishing sectors over the last 25 years. A proud country girl, she’s also on the board of one of Australia's most exciting catalysers - the Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship.
 
Emeritus Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes

Myles McGregor-Lowndes OAM is the former Director of The Australian Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies (ACPNS). He has written extensively about not-for-profit tax and regulation, not-for-profit legal entities, government grants and standard charts of accounts as a means of reducing the compliance burden. He is a founding member of the ATO Charities Consultative Committee and the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission Advisory Board. In June 2003, Myles was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “For service to the community by providing education and support in legal, financial and administrative matters to nonprofit organisations.”
 
He is a member of the Queensland Law Society, an Honourable member of Fundraising Institute Australia, a Founding Director of Australian and New Zealand Third Sector Research Limited, a member of International Third Sector Research, and a legal consultant with Paxton-Hall Lawyers.
 
Bruce Nean

With a career spanning 15 years working in the not-for-profit space, Bruce has been involved in everything from front-facing service provision to the enabling and fundraising side. He bleeds with passion to make a positive difference in this world and get results using the skills at his disposal. Bruce’s recent roles have made use of his array of skills including leadership, creative and strategic thinking, event management, digital marketing, branding and graphic design.

In 2018, Bruce launched the initiative Digital For Good to meet a need in the not-for-profit space in Brisbane. He has created a community to inspire and connect those working in digital and creative industries that want to use their skills for something greater than themselves.
 
Lesley Ray

Mater Foundation
Lesley Ray is Director Philanthropy at Mater Foundation, Queensland where she culminates fundraising practice with organisational management and leadership. She leads a team of fundraising professionals and is charged with the development of the organisation’s individual giving and philanthropic engagement programs.
 
Lesley’s Master’s degree focused on ‘giving circles’, particularly women in philanthropy. Along with five colleagues, Lesley formed the group 'Women and Change' in 2014, Queensland's first ‘giving circle’.
 
Lesley is Chair of the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), an organisation based in Washington DC. She is also a Fellow of Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA), and in 2015, Lesley was announced as the recipient of the Arthur Venn Fundraiser of the Year award, which recognises an outstanding contribution to fundraising in Australia.
 
Adrian Sargeant

Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy
Adrian Sargeant is now Co-Director of the Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy. Adrian was formerly Professor of Fundraising at the Hartsook Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy (at Plymouth University) and the first Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Philanthropy at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia and Avila University, Kansas City, United States.
 
Adrian was the founding Managing Editor of the International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing. He has published over 100 peer reviewed academic articles, 10 books and made over 300 conference appearances in the past 20 years. The majority of this output has focused on the topic of fundraising. He has also acted as a consultant to numerous government bodies including the U.K’s Giving Campaign, latterly authoring their ‘Future of Giving’ report, a blueprint for doubling giving. In 2004, he pioneered the public information website www.charityfacts.org and in 2010 the student site www.studyfundraising.info. Most recently Adrian has completed the design of a new suite of fundraising qualifications for the Institute of Fundraising in London.

In 2010 he was named to the Nonprofit Times' Top 50 Power and Influence list, identifying him as one of the leading proponents of fundraising in the United States. In the same year he was received the Civil Society Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Fundraising, the only academic ever to receive the honor. In 2016 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Institute of Fundraising.
 
Kay Sprinkel Grace

More than 1,000 organisations and tens of thousands of participants at conferences, webinars and gatherings have engaged with Kay Sprinkel Grace over the last three decades. She works with not-for-profits on major giving, strategic development planning, board engagement, capital campaigns and the creation of mission, vision, values and case statements. Her understanding of philanthropy and its potential to change the world is widely respected and her enduring goal is to increase the capacity of client organisations to fulfill their mission.

Kay works directly with organisations on their issues and challenges, mentors colleagues and younger professionals, presents to gatherings of all sizes, and coaches individuals and small groups of decision-makers as they address their most pressing issues. Her design approach plants seeds, unravels tangled situations and sparks agreement. Kay approaches each situation with unique strategies based on the needs of the organisation and on her vast experience, and is guided in all her work by gratitude and joy for being part of the world’s most dynamic sector. In 1990, after ten years as a Development Director for three not-for-profit organisations, Kay founded her own consulting business, Transforming Philanthropy LLC.
 
Kenneth Watkins

Kenneth Watkins Philanthropy

Kenneth is an experienced Philanthropy Director with a demonstrated history of working in the performing arts industry. He is skilled in planned giving, not-for-profit organisations, event management, public speaking, and tessitura.

As a member of the executive team at The Australian Ballet for more than 17 years, Kenneth has made a strong contribution to the vision, values and strategic objectives of the business. He has worked tirelessly to increase the profile of the company and played a leadership role, working with the philanthropy team to ensure The Australian Ballet has the resources to be one of the pre-eminent ballet companies in the world.

His vision is to make a difference through relationship building and securing a strong financial base through philanthropy. As Australians begin to embrace philanthropy as part of their culture, he believes it is vital that all not-for-profits, in particular arts companies, increase their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of fundraising.

Kenneth is passionate about developing the next generation of fundraisers and actively mentoring staff from several organisations across Australia and assisting them to build their strategies and networks.
