Event Description

Main Description: Popular yet underestimated by its rigor for over a century, graphic novels, also known as sequential art, are now recognized by California state standards as a legitimate form of reading text and writing medium for middle and high school classrooms. In our first session, we will break down the strategies readers use to analyze and understand comic panels, gutters, and the combination of words and visuals. You will walk out one session with not only a better understanding of comics, but also a list of reading strategies and knowledge of when to apply them to best support, engage, and challenge all reading levels. The following sessions will focus on standard based graphic novel writing. You will walk away with a prompt, rubric, and both student and teacher powerpoint versions for writing a dystopian graphic novel at either middle or high school writing level.

The 21st century demands visually literate citizens that can process both words and pictures as a form of communication. Therefore, Rachel Hudson uses the familiar written, verbal, and visual mediums of comics, graphic novels, cartoons, and YouTube clips to bridge standards based writing and reading assignments.
