Global Executive Council Meeting - March 2020 Dubai

The goal of The Global Executive Council Book Club is to discuss innovative ideas that are not just warmed over re-statements.

Discussions will lead to new ideas, new thinking, and debate. Books chosen for reading are based on both practice and theory and will use cases with solid examples from practice while also demonstrating a wide grasp of theory. The books will be immediately applicable to the Council needs and can be put into practice with no great expenditures besides thinking how they would best fit into the organization.

Session Description: Insights and Current Trends

The Book Club Series #4:

Range:  Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World

By David Epstein

Is success better achieved through narrow specialization, or is general experimentation a more reliable route to expertise? Ed Hoffman, PMI Strategic Advisor, will facilitate a discussion centered on this topic for our fourth Council leader’s book club discussion.

Using David Epstein’s 2019 book, ‘Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World’ as the source, we will explore implications for performance, growth, and learning. It is fashionable to promote specialization for in-depth skill development; however, research indicates that in our current world of change, agility, and adaptation, an approach that is experimental, creative, and diverse leads to greater success and a broader network. Materials will be provided for engagement and application. While helpful, it is not necessary to have read the book before the session.
