Why Goodwill Bottom Lines are Continuing to Shrink and How You Can Mitigate by Optimizing Your DGR

Track: Donated Goods Retail
Speaker: Jim Martin, President and CEO, and Joy Murphy, Vice President of Donated Goods Retail, Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties

Over the last four years, the number of Goodwill organizations that operate in the red has increased from 8 to 61, and the overall Goodwill expense-to-revenue (E/R) ratio increased from 92.67 to 98.36 percent. This is a direct result of eroding margins within donated goods retail (DGR) programs whose E/R ratio increased from 75.15 to 82.96 percent. If these trends continue, more Goodwill organizations will find themselves in serious financial distress, which will impact the individuals we serve and potentially the overall Goodwill brand.
