2017 Pediatrics Symposium
 
Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participants should be able to:

  1. Incorporate self-study activities to maintain the role of an effective and competent clinician-teacher; and use self-care practices to help manage the demands of a busy clinic including resident training.

  2. Recognize social or emotional difficulties associated with the child with special health care needs and his/her family; and provide guidance and empathetic support and to the child and family.

  3. Identify best practice interventions for pediatricians who work with siblings of children with chronic illness, including assessment of typical sibling reactions to chronic illness, and family impact and sibling quality of life when living with chronic illness.

  4. Recognize, diagnose and provide early management for patients who present in early sepsis as early recognition is key to improved outcomes.

  5. Cite the timeline involved in initiating treatment for a patient suspected to have shock/sepsis as well as guidelines for transport in our system; and apply clinical pearls that can help prevent a missed diagnosis.

  6. Assess the presenting symptoms and signs of patients with BDD/eating disorders, PTSD/traumatic stress, and ADHD; and apply current recommendations for treatment.

  7. Recognize the risk factors for recurrent UTIs and strategies for intervention; and understand the controversy over imaging and management of febrile UTIs in infants and children and apply current recommendations.

  8. Identify some of the unique medical needs of LGBTQ youth and refer appropriately so that the patients receive adequate support and follow up.

  9. Interpret information and educate families regarding commonly used natural products and other therapeutic modalities and cite appropriate evidence-based research.
