Jessi Arrington

Jessi Arrington is co-founder of WORKSHOP, a Brooklyn-based studio focused on merging design and social responsibility. Clients include TED, Echoing Green, Google and GOOD. She’s a board member and the Community Chair of AIGA/NY and is a founding member of the co-working club Studiomates. Her talk on dressing colorfully in nothing new can be found on TED. Eiseman is a color specialist who has been called “the international color guru.” In fact, her color expertise is recognized worldwide, especially as a prime consultant to Pantone®. She has helped many companies, from small one person start-ups to large corporations, make the best and most educated choice of color for product development, logos and identification, brand imaging, web sites, packaging, point of purchase, interior/exterior design or any other application where color choice is critical to the success of the product or environment.

Bill Moggridge

Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Museum

Bill Moggridge is the director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Bill designed the first laptop computer, the Grid Compass, launched in 1982. He describes his career as having three phases, first as a designer with projects for clients in ten countries, second as a co-founder of IDEO where he developed design methods for interdisciplinary design teams, and third as a spokesperson for the value of design in everyday life, writing, presenting and teaching, supported by the historical depth and contemporary reach of the museum.

A Royal Designer for Industry, Bill pioneered interaction design and is one of the first people to integrate human factors into the design of software and hardware.  He has taught at the Royal College of Art and at Stanford University. His books, Designing Interactions and Designing Media, reveal developments in the design of technology through interviews and commentary.

Eddie Opara

Eddie Opara is a multi-faceted designer whose work encompasses strategy, design and technology. He joined Pentagram’s New York office as partner in 2010, where his projects have included the design of brand identity, publications, packaging, environments, exhibitions, interactive installations, websites, user interfaces and software, with many of his projects ranging across multiple media.

Eddie’s clients have included the Menil Foundation, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Queens Museum of Art, the Mori Art Museum, JWT, Vitra, Prada, and many more.  

He has won numerous awards, including a Gold Cube from the Art Directors Club and honors from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and I.D. magazine. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and has appeared in publications such as Archis, Surface, Graphis and I.D.

 

Leni Schwendinger

Leni Schwendinger Light Projects LTD

Leni Schwendinger is a recognized authority on the many issues and applications of urban lighting, art and color, with more than 15 years of experience creating illuminated environments for public spaces all over the world and providing advisory services to manufacturers. Leni’s public speaking engagements have included the worldwide cities NightSeeing™ event as well as presentations in Milan, Hong Kong and New York City. Her color consultancy includes specification of materials, surfaces and their interaction with light. Color projects have included “Fashion in Colors” at Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Louisville Second Street Bridge and award-winning public-art installation Dreaming in Color, a 3-Dimensional Color-Field located at Marion O. McCaw Hall, Seattle. Her professional awards include such recognition as multiple Lumens, SEGD and the NEA Japanese Residency Fellowship. Light Projects has enjoyed extensive coverage in design and architecture press and media.

Ruth Lande Shuman

A dynamic and passionate innovator, Ruth Lande Shuman is an award-winning industrial designer deeply devoted to supporting at-risk students’ commitment to education through Publicolor, a nonprofit organization she founded. Publicolor is based on the deceptively simple—yet incredibly successful—idea that one can fundamentally improve students’ attitudes and engagement by improving their learning environments. As Ruth says, “We aren’t just transforming buildings—we are transforming lives. We are focusing on education by design.”

Gael Towey

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia

Gael Towey is the Chief Creative and Editorial Director for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Gael has overseen the company’s design and creative teams since its inception 20 years ago. She has had the privilege to work with Martha and many amazing editors and art directors to develop six different magazine titles: Living, Weddings, Whole Living, Blueprint, Kids and Everyday Food. In addition to her publishing experience, Gael has managed the product design, marketing and packaging launches across many markets—from the early Martha by Mail catalog, to thousands of home and garden products in Kmart for Martha Stewart Everyday, to the Martha Stewart Collection at Macy’s… and five different lines of paint.

Gael also performed a stint as acting editor-in-chief of Living, which she describes as, "the most fun I’ve had, to be able, finally, to focus on one thing for a change." Most recently, Gael was the driving force behind “Boundless Beauty,” a special issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine created for the iPad and featuring original and interactive content. It became the number one paid app on the App Store immediate after its launch; it was also recognized by Time Magazine as one of the top 10 magazine covers of 2010. Gael also worked closely with Callaway Digital Arts to create the “Martha Makes Cookies” app for the iPad.

Under Gael’s creative direction, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has won numerous awards including the industry’s most prestigious American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) Awards for Design and Photography. In 2007, MSLO was honored with the AIGA Corporate Leadership Award, which recognizes the role of forward thinking organizations that have been instrumental in the advancement of design. In addition, Gael was the recipient of a 1999 DaimlerChrysler Design Award, which recognizes designers and design teams who accomplish extraordinary innovation. In 2002, The Art Directors Club presented MSLO with its Vision Award for long-term commitment to good design and its impact on our culture. Gael and the MSLO designers have also been recognized with numerous awards from the Society of Publication Designers, the Art Directors Club, American Institute of Graphic Arts and American Photography. Gael served on the board of the Art Directors Club from 2004 to 2008. She is currently serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board of the Boston University College of Fine Arts.

Prior to her role at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Gael was the design director for House and Garden magazine, art director for Clarkson N. Potter Publishers, and a designer for Studio Books, Viking Press. Ms. Towey is currently at work on a book about creating the Martha Stewart Brand. She thinks of her home in Greenwich Village (where she lives with her National Design Award winning husband Stephen Doyle and their tall children) as a laboratory for experimentation and entertaining.
