Operational Leadership for Extraordinary Impact, Part 1

Speaker: Everett Shupe II, Executive Development Program Director, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.

Goodwill organizations operate in a complex, dynamic and constantly changing environment. To succeed, leaders must ensure that strategy, culture and talent management practices are aligned. Attendees will identify the key features of their current environment and develop plans to ensure that their strategies can respond to their environments. Using the leadership skills covered in this session will allow you to implement operational plans at the local level. These plans require the use of data, forecasting, and risk management, which are covered in Part II of this workshop from 1:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.

Concurrent Sessions

Speaker: Jeff Maddison, Director of Operations, Goodwill Industries of the Columbia, Inc.

Goodwill Industries of the Columbia (Kennewick, WA), like many Goodwills, was facing rising costs and flat sales. To determine what actions to take, the team initiated an extensive data collection and analytics program. They collected data on the
most popular items sold, the employees who produced and priced them, and when in the rotation cycle items sold. In this session, you will discover which data they collected and how they used that data to make effective decisions.

Gain insight into why marketing online is different than marketing for brick-and-mortar stores, and learn why it’s critical to the success of reStitch. Find out how future plans for reStitch will provide opportunities for other Goodwill organizations to sell clothing online.

Asking Better Questions: Gaining Insights that Hit the Bottom Line
Speakers: Gordon Robinson, Principal, Changing Management; and David Downes, Vice President, Data Analytics Initiative, and Jessica Bunting, Business Analytics Project Manager, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.

In 2017, GII is developing and piloting the Data Analytics Initiative (DAI), which is aimed at harnessing the powerful data gathered by the membership. While technology enables the initiative, it is actually a business endeavor, as the technology is only as good as the business question it's used to answer. This discussion will focus on how to generate the kind of inclusive business questions that big data needs in order to render the best insights.

Staffing Services Part 1: Starting a Staffing Services Agency 101 — The Essential Steps
Speakers: Michael Boelter, Executive Director and Suzanne Maldonado, Director of Sales and Professional Services, Goodwill TalentBridge, LLC, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin; and Robin Carson, Senior Vice President, Employment Services, and Carol Ashby, Director, GoodWork Staffing Services, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont

Innovative Sources of Capital – Bring Your Ideas to Foundations!
Speaker: Michele Gorr, Chief Financial Officer, Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado

As foundations become more restrictive with grants, it is necessary to seek out alternative transaction structures that are more palliative to funders. One Goodwill has leveraged program-related investment (PRI) transactions to fund capital needs — from retail to mission — that are a win-win for both the organizations that fund them and the programs they support. This session will showcase four of the unique transactions that foundations have funded with Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado — from $150,000 to $10 million. Join this interactive session to hear from your peers and to share your ideas and best practices.

GoodSites: The Next Generation of Market Planning and Analytics, Part 1
Speakers: Matthew Montgomery, Director, Client Development, Intalytics; and Kyle Stewart, Senior Director, Donated Goods Retail, Goodwill Industries International, Inc.

Goodwill leaders hoping to grow their donated goods retail businesses often ask questions like: Can I grow my donor base without opening new stores? Can I open more stores without cannibalizing the ones I already have? Is my e-commerce shopper really different from my in-store shopper? GoodSites can help answer these questions and others related to retail growth! In this session, presenters will describe how customer data was used in conjunction with Experian Mosaic household-level segmentation, demographics, and massive mobile data to profile Goodwill donors and shoppers.

Part 2 of this session, from 1:15 – 2:30 p.m., will describe how Goodwill donor and shopper profile information is synthesized, then leveraged to develop models that estimate the donor and shopper potential for all consumers.

Real Kaizen
Speaker: Joseph DiPalma, Director of Process Improvement, Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut

Join us as we define what kaizen really is, and broaden this definition beyond what most expect. Within Goodwill, kaizen typically has been narrowly defined to resetting backrooms of retail operations, but it can go beyond that practice. The application of continuous improvement (CI) has reduced defective product and old product from the sales floors at Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut from 28 to 2 percent. If you are not aware of CI, you will learn how and where to begin. If you currently have a CI program, you will benefit from this expanded understanding and gain new ground to grow.

In this session, you will learn what makes a good influencer for your organization, how to find and track influencers, and how to create a partnership that is mutually beneficial. In addition to reviewing sample case studies from leading nonprofits such as Charity: Water and the University of California, we will also look at examples for smaller campaigns such as the National Association of Corporate Directors. The session will conclude with examples of influencer outreach from GII's most recent Ad Council campaign, details on how you can leverage these and other campaign assets, and a best practices guide for the future.
