In this session, we will explore ways for cooperative and mutual insurers to orient, educate and promote our unique model of insurance to regulatory and legislative authorities. Over the past year two important orientation documents have been developed for insurance supervisors from the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) (IAIS Application Paper on the Regulation and Supervision of Mutuals, Cooperatives and Community Based Organisations in Increasing Access to Insurance Markets) as well as ICMIF´s own Practical Guide to Understanding Cooperative and Mutual Insurance for Insurance Supervisors publication adapted to Latin American realities.

Among nonlife emerging trends we´ll explore include drones, autonomous vehicles, and 3D printing, as well as ethical considerations. Emerging trends in life include worldwide costs pressures, technology developments in artificial intelligence, devices and payment systems, and evolving business models.

As risk in the modern world changes and becomes more complex, the insurance industry and regulators are re-examining their risk assessment framework. This session will explore the changing risk environments and their impact from the perspectives of governance and management. Among the challenges we will discuss include the increased scrutiny of governance by regulators and greater responsibilities for enterprise risk management; institutional policies and guidelines for product development, the development of policies and strategies for investment management, and assessing the insurer´s appetite risk.

In this session, we will explore the potential and growth of inclusive insurance, traditionally known as microinsurance, in today´s modern marketplace. First, we will learn about the ICMIF Foundation´s 5-5-5 Plan strategy to develop national inclusive insurance markets, as well as an example of a first phase national diagnostic study of the cooperative insurance sector in Colombia. We will also learn about innovative inclusive insurance products aimed at traditional non-traditional markets, including low income women, subsistence farmers and other underserved populations.
