AdvantAge Ontario is inviting proposals to present at our 2020 Annual General Meeting & Convention, being held April 22-24, 2020 in Toronto. This event is an opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise with senior staff from the long term care, seniors' housing and community service sectors. We welcome and encourage all AdvantAge Ontario members, as well as speakers in the academic community, consultants and others providing services in the seniors' care, housing and community service sectors to share innovative and practical ideas and programs, research or other relevant content. 


Important Dates

  • Call for Presentations closing date has been extended to Friday, October 25, 2019.
  • Applicants will be notified of the status of their submission in November 2019 (subject to change, pending application close date extension). 
  • Convention registration opens January 2020.

Opportunities to Present


(1) Concurrent Sessions

Concurrent sessions are the core of the education program at the Convention and typically focus on emerging sector issues, successful practices and programs, research and other relevant content. They will take place on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24. Sessions are 60-90 minutes in length, may include multiple presenters, and are intended for 25-100 participants. Presenters are expected to engage participants in interactive learning activities, provide electronic handouts, and allow 15-20 minutes for discussion. Concurrents are organized into the following six streams:

    (2) Lightning Talks Session - NEW

    Lightning Talks are short, high-impact presentations that are no more than eight minutes per presenter. Speakers are required to make their points clear and concise and deliver them in a conversational presentation style. The focus of the 2020 lightning talk session is  the critical issues of health human resources. Suggested topics include but are not limited to the following: 


    • Partnerships with high schools and colleges to educate PSWs and nurses
    • Innovative recruitment and retention initiatives (e.g. marketing campaigns, targeting non-traditional groups, initiatives to provide full time employment to new hires, preceptorships for PSWs, career laddering, etc.)
    • Unique hiring strategies (e.g. job sharing, secondments, etc.) 
    • Building staff morale 


    All submissions should focus on:

    • Case studies with member providers that provide lessons learned;
    • “How-to” information that stimulates and provides attendees with new skills, processes or technology, and efficiency gains;
    • Best practices that have been implemented; or 
    • Practical and forward-thinking content that promotes the exchange of ideas with attendees.


    ​​​​​​​Consideration will be given to the presentation format and style to support an interactive discussion. Keep in mind that long term care refers to the full continuum - long term care homes, seniors' housing and supportive housing and community-based services. It should be clear whether your presentation is intended for a specific sector or is broad enough to be applicable to the entire continuum. 


    Commercial Content Prohibited

    Sessions are intended to educate and support learning. Submissions promoting a product, service or company will not be accepted.

    Submission Process

    • All submissions must be submitted through the online electronic submission form. 
    • You may submit more than one proposal for consideration, either as an individual, co-presenter or as part of a panel. 
    • All presenters are required to provide AdvantAge Ontario with an electronic copy of any handout materials in advance for review and posting. These handouts will be included on our Convention app that all conference delegates can download and/or print.
