Alex Thompson is Professor-Director of Gastroenterology at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (University of Melbourne). AT is an honorary Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Gastroenterology Department, Duke University Medical Center. AT’s major research interest is viral hepatitis, and he has spent much of the past decade investigating the pathogenesis, natural history and treatment outcomes of HBV and HCV infection, with a focus on translational research that can optimize existing treatment algorithms. He has been actively involved in clinical trials that have led to the registration of the new HCV medicines. More recent work focusses on clinical strategies to promote the elimination of the transmission of viral hepatitis, including primary care-based models of treatment for people who inject drugs and prisoners. He is widely published in journals including Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, Gut, Gastroenterology, NEJM and Nature.
