About the Event

Accelerate AI Adoption on the Factor Floor: Building Foundations with Standards

Artificial intelligence is moving out of pilot projects and into production environments across the manufacturing enterprise. Whether it holds at scale depends on the infrastructure underneath it: shared terminology, data that transfers between systems, methods for measuring model performance, and criteria for validating AI behavior when safety and quality are at stake. Those are standards questions, and most of them are still open.

The second AI in Manufacturing Systems Workshop examines where AI is being deployed on the factory floor today and which consensus standards must exist for that deployment to be reliable, interoperable, and trusted. The program is vendor-neutral. Sessions address data interoperability and reference architectures, performance metrics and benchmarking, data quality and model standards, safety and cybersecurity, system integration, human-AI teaming, AI-driven quality and predictive maintenance, and governance and trustworthiness, with a sector spotlight that examines one production environment in depth.

The workshop follows the inaugural edition, held June 3, 2026 in Dallas immediately before the founding meeting of Committee F50. In the months since, F50 has organized into an executive subcommittee and four working subcommittees — Terminology, Data, Critical Requirements, and Planning — and has set its first standards priorities. This edition reports on that work, tests it against current industry practice, and opens it to the wider community for input.

Who Should Attend

The program is built for anyone applying artificial intelligence in a manufacturing context:

  • Manufacturing engineers, production managers, and plant leaders deploying AI in operations
  • Technology and platform providers building AI systems for industrial environments
  • Quality, reliability, safety, and cybersecurity professionals
  • Researchers and academics working on industrial AI and smart manufacturing
  • Government, defense, and national laboratory stakeholders
  • Standards, regulatory, and conformity assessment professionals

Members of Committee F50 are a core constituency, and the day is designed to deliver value to the broader manufacturing community first.

Abstract Submission

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract using the online Abstract Submission Portal no later than DATE. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.

The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature, nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that your abstract submission is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. The symposium chair(s) will notify you via email by DATE of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the author will be requested to submit a final abstract a few months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.

What Participants Gain

  • A current view of how AI is being used across manufacturing operations, presented by practitioners rather than through product roadmaps
  • Working knowledge of the data, measurement, and validation problems that determine whether an AI deployment scales beyond a pilot
  • Case studies from production environments, including implementations that did not work and what was learned from them
  • Two moderated panels: one on where F50 standards must move next, one on scaling trustworthy AI across the enterprise
  • Structured networking with engineers, technology providers, regulators, and researchers working on the same problems
