Arthur Miller’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s famous play about a courageous scientist who is condemned for his controversial discovery probably had more to do with McCarthyism, blacklisting and mob hysteria than with science itself. Yet its exploration of the conflict between personal integrity and majoritarian prejudice—and between truth and misinformation—continues to resonate with each generation.
It was an environmentalist play in the late 20th century, and the recent revival on Broadway implicitly referenced the crisis of expertise in contemporary politics. For lawyers, the play presents an opportunity to reflect on ethics, including the rules regarding presentation of expert witnesses, as well as our broader obligations as public citizens to “further the public's understanding of and confidence in the rule of law and the justice system” (Preamble, PA Rules of Professional Conduct).
