About the Event

The Workshop on Detection Limits and Censoring Data in Workplace Exposure Assessment will be held October 8, 2026 . The workshop is organized by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality, and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, Jacksonville, Florida, USA in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee. The language of the workshop will be English.

Objective and Scope

The workshop will discuss the challenges and methodologies associated with measuring and interpreting exposure data in occupational settings.

Learning objectives:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of detection limits and overall method uncertainty in workplace measurements, how they are calculated, and their influence on data interpretation and risk assessments.
  • Explore various methodologies for handling censored data and provide tools and statistical approaches for drawing valid conclusions from incomplete datasets.
  • Learn about the latest research trends and emerging technologies to help them identify critical issues requiring attention.
  • Leave equipped with new knowledge, tools, and connections to effectively enhance workplace exposure assessment practices while recognizing the crucial role that standardized methods play in achieving these goals.

Topics for this workshop include:

  • Detection and quantification limits
  • Factors influencing detection limits (analytical and statistical methodology, instrument calibration, sample preparation)
  • Measurement uncertainty
  • Data censoring
  • Interpretation of censored data in exposure studies
  • Considerations in data collection
  • Needs for new or improved standards

Who Should Attend

This workshop aims to bring occupational health professionals, industrial hygienists, researchers, statisticians, safety officers, and representatives from regulatory agencies together to facilitate collaboration on insights and best practices related to detection limits and data censoring.

Abstract Submission

To participate in the workshop, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word abstract to the technical chairs (listed below) no later than May 31, 2026.

Publication Information

Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. STP papers should be full-length technical papers of approximately 10,000 words, significantly contribute to the technical literature, and must include a review of past work in the relevant area and present information of current interest or probe new fields. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email, but also can be found by clicking here.

Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than DATE at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP. Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers.

The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

Technical Program

A technical program (presentation times, paper titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on the ASTM website by August 2026.

Registrants will be emailed the digital Program Booklet, which will include the Technical Program and the full abstracts, approximately one week before the event, and also the morning of the start of the event. For more information, contact symposia@astm.org.
