General logistics during the institute

 

  • Food: Light refreshments and lunch will be provided from Monday through Friday with a reception on Monday evening.
    • Breakfast: Light morning meal with coffee, tea available each day.
    • Morning & Afternoon Coffee Breaks:
    • Mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks (e.g., cookies, granola bars) with coffee, tea, and water.
    • Lunch: Provided daily at campus dining facilities.
    • Evening Receptions: Appetizers and beverages served on Monday and Thursday evenings.
  • Water: We have a water fountain available in the room, please bring a reusable water bottle
  • Laptop Required: The HPC and Data Science Summer Institute is designed as hand-on program and does require that you bring a laptop with administrative privileges and wireless connectivity.

    • Available Networks
      • eduroam : Secure, university-affiliated network. Preferred for attendees.
      • UC San Diego GUEST : Limited bandwidth/access; only if you cannot access eduroam.
    • To Connect via eduroam:
      • Before Traveling :
        • Visit your home institution’s IT website for eduroam setup instructions.
        • Test connectivity on your campus to ensure credentials work.

Public transportation from the SAN airport to campus: 

1. Take the San Diego Flyer (a free shuttle from the airport to the Old Town Transit Center). You can find more information including a tracker, schedule, and pick up location near the bottom of this page: Public Transportation - SAN Airport.

2. Take the Blue line Trolley to UCSD (Route Blue: Blue | Bus Schedule | MTS – San Diego | San Diego Metropolitan Transit System)

Parking

Parking permits are required on the UC San Diego campus seven days a week: Monday-Friday from 7:00am to 11:00pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 10:30am to 11:00pm.

  • Permits may be purchased online through the Transportation & Parking Services website or via the ParkMobile App.
  • Visiting UC faculty and staff who hold annual permits at their home campuses are eligible for up to 5 consecutive days of complimentary parking at UC San Diego. Visit for more details: https://transportation.ucsd.edu/visit/visitor/reciprocity.html.
  • The most convenient parking location closest to the meeting location is the Hopkins parking structure located on Hopkins Dr. and Voigt Dr, just south of SDSC 
    • Alternatively, Pangea parking structure is also available. 
      • Room & Board Scholars - this lot is closest to your housing check-in location. 
  • Both parking locations offer spaces in the following: 
    • "B" (Green), "S" (Yellow) at $8/day (Summer offer - subject to change)

      • How to pay using Park Mobile App
        • Conference Services guests park in any B or S parking space in a campus parking lot.
        • Enter zone number 47800.
        • Confirm your information, including location, license plate, time and cost.
    • "V" (White) spaces  at $32/day (Park Mobile enter zone number 4752)
  • Parking legally is the attendee’s responsibility. The penalty for an improperly parked car is at least $65 per day. We cannot be held responsible for citations issued for parking in an incorrect space or improperly displaying your permit.
  • Due to challenges with parking on-campus, we do advise using other methods such as some noted below if possible.

Transportation

Ride share services are recommended if you choose not to drive onto campus. 

The SDSC driveway is no longer a permitted drop-off or pickup point for Lyft, but it is for Uber. Please use an official campus Passenger Loading Zone for Lyft.

To find the nearest designated zones for Lyft drop-off:
   1. Enter 9836 Hopkins Dr. into your app

   2. Select University Center- Geisel Loop and then walk to SDSC

  • 237: UC San Diego - Rancho Bernardo Transit Station
  • 974: UC San Diego Coaster Connector; campus, Sorrento Valley Station
  • 978: Torrey Pines, Sorrento Valley Station
  • 979: North University City, Sorrento Valley Station
