Keynote Presentation
Tom Wright is the Nampa Fire Division Chief of EMS and a 36‑year paramedic whose leadership, resilience and vision have helped reshape community cardiac‑response preparedness across Idaho. In September 2024, while attending the Southwest Idaho Fire Chiefs Association conference in McCall, Wright suffered a sudden cardiac event—experiencing classic heart‑attack symptoms before collapsing during the conference. Thanks to the swift actions of Jeremy Schabot, Deputy Chief of Training and Safety with Ada County Paramedics and the presence of an AED carried by Meridian Fire EMS Chief JD Hendrick, Wright’s life was saved on the spot.
During his recovery, a pivotal hospital‑room conversation with retired Division Chief Jeff Mutchie, now working on special projects, sparked a bold new vision: improving early access to lifesaving AEDs and empowering citizens to take action during cardiac emergencies. This collaboration set in motion two major community initiatives—the AED Loaner Program and monthly community CPR/AED training classes—both launching as a direct outcome of Wright and his team’s shared commitment to saving lives through accessibility, education, and preparedness.
Today, Chief Tom Wright uses his personal cardiac‑arrest survival story to inspire audiences about resilience, teamwork, and the power of community driven public safety innovation. His message is one of urgency, hope, and empowerment—reminding communities that preparedness is not just a strategy, but a shared responsibility that can save lives.
