How to Apply
The CIML Summer Institute typically receives over 100 applications annually, with approximately 45 candidates selected for participation. Applicants will be screened to make sure that they have the necessary background to benefit from the institute, and that the applicants have a compelling need for the skills being taught in their research or teaching.
Key Selection Criteria:
- Must be from a U.S. institution or company
- Institutional email address must match your institutional affiliation
- Verified ACCESS-CI Portal User
- Compelling Need: Applicants must demonstrate how the program’s skills (HPC, data science, AI, ML) will directly advance their research or teaching.
- We encourage applicants from U.S. institutions with limited or no access to supercomputing resources, with emphasis on broadening participation across scientific domains, to apply.
- Alumni may reapply after a 5-year hiatus to ensure opportunities for new participants.
Room and Board Scholarship
In support of the CIML Summer Institute, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), SDSC awards a limited number of scholarships to cover on-campus room and board (dorm style private room, shared common area and bathrooms). Indicate on your application if you would like to be considered for the room and board scholarship.
Scholarship funds only apply to room and board and are not available for any other travel expenses (i.e., airfare, transportation, etc...). Registration fee is still required from all attendees. CIML Summer Institute attendance and on-campus housing is limited.
Travel Award
The CIML Summer Institute will provide a limited number of travel awards to offset the cost of airfare and other identified travel expenses. This award is separate from the room and board scholarships. The travel awards are intended for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who lack financial support from their institution and would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of attending.
Registration fee is required from all attendees.

The application process will start with a registration on the ACCESS portal in order to verify your ACCESS ID. If you do not have an ACCESS ID, please visit ACCESS to create one.
Once your ACCESS ID has been created or you have logged in, visit this page to first “register” for the event. You will receive receive an email with a link to officially apply for the Institute. You must officially apply to be considered for the program.
