WPRC PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
No standardized template is provided for slides; however, presenters are asked to follow these guidelines:
- Corporate logos may be included on the first slide only.
- Presenters must not provide commercial messages during the presentation. Commercialism may result in exclusion from future WPRC presentations.
- Make one to three major points per slide. A neat and uncluttered style is best. Use highlighted bullets to get the points across. Heavy line drawings, perhaps with color, come across best.
- Use a large enough font to be seen 60' away. Use 26 letters per line and only 6 lines per slide. Use only two different font styles per slide or frame. To test its readability, stand 9’ away from a 15” monitor to test readability.
- Avoid busy, confusing backgrounds. Do not exceed four colors on a slide. Use a color for the letters with high contrast (usually darker) against the background. A gradient background that changes from dark to light can make words difficult to read. Keep the background simple and get the message across.
- Bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs are effective images to show trends and statistics. Reduce coordinate lines to a minimum. Letter the coordinate values and captions outside the grid. Show no more than 3 or 4 curves per slide, and no more than 4 bars on a bar graph. Use contrasting, bright colors to delineate between categories. Simplify the graphs. Show titles across the top of slides. Do not use normal engineering drawings as slide material. Less detail on more slides or frames is preferable. Handouts can include further details and/or explanations.
PRESENTATION DURATION
You are allocated 15 minutes for your presentation plus 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Do not prepare more material than you can present in 15 minutes.
DELIVERING YOUR PRESENTATION
- Speak clearly and don't rush. Although you are familiar with the information, your audience may not be.
- Don’t read your paper; talk about it. Speak from an outline or notes. Look at the audience and chat with them rather than lecturing.
- Refrain from giving commercial messages in the paper, presentation, and any handout materials (worth repeating).
- During the discussion period, repeat each question from the audience before answering.
- Stay on time! An automatic timer will be placed on the lectern and will provide a 5-minute warning as well as an alert that your time is finished.
- Enjoy your presentation; the audience will be there to learn from you.
