2026 Pre-Conference Courses:

  • Assistive Technology in Action - Dr. Christopher Bonn

This two-day preconference workshop offers an in-depth, hands-on exploration of the many ways Assistive Technology (AT) and innovative applications can transform teaching and learning for exceptional students—and for all learners. Participants will build a strong foundation in traditional AT while also discovering emerging tools, including AI-driven supports, that increase access, independence, and engagement.

Through live demonstrations, case studies, and collaborative activities, educators, paraprofessionals, and families will experience how AT can be practically applied in literacy, communication, and daily classroom routines. The workshop also emphasizes the importance of cultural relevance and equity in Alaska’s unique educational landscape, addressing both urban and rural challenges.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will leave with a personalized toolkit of strategies and resources they can immediately implement in their classrooms and schools. More than just learning about technology, participants will experience how AT and AI can reduce teacher workload, strengthen collaboration, and create life-changing opportunities for students.

Pre-Course Technology Requirement

Prior to the start of the course, all participants must have access to at least one Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or Grok). A free version of any of these tools is sufficient—no paid subscription is required. Participants will use their chosen AI platform during the workshop for hands-on activities, collaborative tasks, and applied projects demonstrating how AI can support instructional design, communication, and assistive technology integration in educational settings.

  • Promoting Student Success with Functional Behavior Assessment & Behavior Intervention Planning - Dr. Carol Ann Davis and Dr. Kathleen Artman Meeker - SOLD OUT 1.12.26

This interactive two-day training introduces educators and support staff to the foundational principles of function-based supports. Participants will explore the full behavior support cycle—from identifying student needs to implementing and monitoring individualized interventions. Walk away with free, research-based tools and resources from University of Washington’s ibestt (Integrating Behavior Support and Team Technology) project that you can use to guide implementation of function-based supports.

Day 1: Foundations of Functional Assessment

- Understand the purpose and process of Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
- Explore coaching resources and classroom tools to use while plans are under development (e.g., classroom check, practice guides)
- Learn how to operationally define behaviors of concern
- Learn how to identify antecedents, behaviors, and consequences
- Practice developing behavior hypotheses using real-world scenarios

Day 2: Designing and Implementing Behavior Intervention Plans

- Translate FBA results into effective, function-based intervention strategies
- Build Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that teach replacement behaviors, reinforce positive actions, and respond to challenges
- Use Intervention Plans and Progress Chart tools to support implementation and data tracking
- Collaborate in teams to simulate planning and coaching conversations

Participants will leave with practical tools, access to ibestt’s free online resource library, and a clear roadmap for integrating function-based supports into their school’s behavior planning process. Access to digital Intervention Guides and video library will be provided to the attendees.  Digital copies of presentations and handouts will be provided to ASSEC Event Coordinator in advance of the preconference.
