Course description

This course will discuss information and resources for providers to improve the lives of people with laryngectomy and their care partners.  Participants will learn about concepts of alaryngeal communication and changes to pulmonary function and eating after total laryngectomy including Heat-Moisture Exchanger benefits.   Other topics include survivorship, quality of life, and the patient journey. 

Learner objectives

  • List three types of alaryngeal communication 
  • Describe changes to breathing and eating that result from laryngectomy surgery. 
  • Explain how a Heat Moisture Exchanger (HME) functions and the benefits of HME use after total laryngectomy surgery. 
  • Identify two public resources for educational support about improving quality of life after total laryngectomy surgery.
