Event Location:  Hilton Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Organized by: ASTM Committee C01 on Cement and Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates

About the Event

The Workshop on Low-Carbon Concrete: Industry Trends and their Impact on ASTM Cement and Concrete Standards will be held December 7, 2025, from 1:00pm - 7:00pm EST. The workshop is organized by ASTM Committee C01 on Cement and Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, and will be held at the Hilton Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia, United States in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee. The language of the workshop will be English.

Objective and Scope

This workshop will examine the release of new code requirements, government grants, and the increased use of reduced carbon materials, and their impact on ASTM International’s standards, guides, practices, and test methods used in the cement and concrete industry.

Topics for this workshop include:

  • Common definitions
    • GWP (basics, calculations, examples)
    • PCR and EPDs (what are they, how are they obtained, where are they sourced, how long are they good for)
    • Low-carbon, reduced-carbon, and net zero
  • What are the implications or missing elements within the cement and concrete committees’ documents that need to be addressed?
  • What does this mean for testing (procedures, results, prequalification), timeliness of results versus application?
  • Qualification, classification, and definition of new materials
  • Adapting and new materials such as Type IL or Type IT cement, SCMs, etc.
  • Policy adoptions in practice, i.e. who is using or demanding this type of concrete?

Abstract Submission

To participate in the symposiumworkshop, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract no later than May 16, 2025 to the workshop chairs, Rich Szecsy or Nick Popoff.

Abstracts must include the presenter’s name, their organization/affiliation, email address, and phone number at a minimum to be considered for this event. The Workshop Chairs will notify authors of their abstract’s acceptance for presentation by mid-July.

Publication Information

Symposium authors are required to submit their papers for ASTM publication in Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. STP papers should be full-length technical papers of approximately 10,000 words, significantly contribute to the technical literature, and must include a review of past work in the relevant area and present information of current interest or probe new fields. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email, but also can be found by clicking here.

Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than DATE at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP. Please note that all submitted papers are subject to peer review by two independent reviewers.

The STP will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and Google Scholar.

Technical Program

A technical program (presentation times and titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on the ASTM website by September 2025.
